Goals for 2008

It's that wonderful time of the year again. I have four fundamental career goals for 2008:

  1. Provide more value to customers through improved training content and products
  2. Increase the effectiveness of our website
  3. Publish more technical/training content on this blog
  4. Follow the Oslo wave and explore new areas of interest

I also have one crazy personal goal for 2008:

  1. Run my first marathon

I have a bunch of other personal goals that I won't bore you with but suffice it to say that 2008 is going to be an interesting year in a lot of ways -- a year of huge change (hmm, perhaps I should run for President).

Good luck with the marathon. Having done one, I can tell you that actually running it is easy. Doing the training is the hard part, and even that isn't that hard.

Which one are you doing? I'm doing the Marine Corps Marathon in October.

You don't know who you're talking to here, for me, running is like an allergy.

I'm doing the Ogden Marathon on May 17. I'm training with a few buddies, using Hal Higdon's novice program. I've been doing about 15 miles a week since Nov, but the miles are about to start picking up!

Running a marathon is actually fun and not pain. It is a great feeling running with some 10.000 other people. You won't be able to stop.

Your first four aims unfortunately sound like the usual marketing bloatware yada yada.

Maybe you should just have started with point three and skipped this blog post ...

"running it is easy", "fun and not pain"??

Hmmm... Not too sure about those comments. I have done two marathons, and just started training for a third. I would say it is rewarding on a personal level, but part of that is pushing yourself to your limits - which, unless your on morphine - is painful.

3:14:28 was my last time...

Yeah, I have to agree with Paul...so far it's been a lot of pain. ;-) I've been suffering through a terrible case of shin splints. Uggh.

You can DO IT!

I ran my first marathon a couple of years ago. If you don't have a coach, download a training plan. This is the one I used:

http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/Mar00novice.htm

I discovered that you don't want to be both the coach and the runner ... just be the runner. If the plan says "run 10 miles" today, then that's what you do. Simple as that. If you are DECIDING how much to run today, then you're being both the coach and the runner ... avoid that, IMHO.

Yes, the time commitment is the hardest part, but if you are in reasonable shape, you will succeed.

Oh yeah - and good luck on that technology stuff, too!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Funny, we're also using Hal Higdon's "novice" program. Apparently, he's the man. We did about 1.5 months of pre-training for the 'real' training. ;-) We just completed week #1 now. There's still a ways to go.

Daniel, I can appreciate your skepticism...let's talk again in a few months.
