Long story short, I’ve not been using IE8 on my main machine. It’s a no-beta zone. Period.

So, after I did upgrade, I had trouble getting a VM to start on a remote box of mine.
The menus appeared a bit weird and picking a item did nothing.

Turns out you need to view the page using Page | Compatibility View.

Problem solved.

Enjoy!

Blend 3 MIX Preview and TFS 2008 Integration

Today at MIX 2009, Microsoft announced a number of new things. One of the things I’m excited about is the new version of Blend and its support for Team Foundation Server (TFS).

To try this out, you’ll want to first download one of the virtual machines I’ve blogged about.

You’ll then want to get all the bits from Microsoft related to Silverlight 3, Blend 3, etc. Once you’ve got everything installed, you may find it a bit weird at first. There’s no Open from Source Control command or even an Add command.

At least for this preview release, in order to work with version control you need to do the following things first:

Have access to or create a Team Project
Technorati Tags:

Create a workspace mapping from a location in your Team Project to a location on disk

Using Visual Studio, get some Blend compatible project under version control

Start Blend and now enjoy the version control goodness available in the preview including:

Check in

Undo Pending Changes

Check out

Get Latest Version
Gets Specific Version

View History

Resolve Conflicts

and more …

So here’s what I did to try things out:

Loaded up a diff drive for one of my “all-up” VSTS virtual machines.

Installed Silverlight 3, Blend 3, etc.

Created a new Team Project called MIX09.
 .

Using the Source Control Explorer created a mapping by clicking the Not Mapped link between C:\MIX09 (a directory I created) and $/MIX09.

Created some folders to organize things ($/MIX09/Main/src/Samples/).

I then dragged and dropped the samples from My Documents\Expression\Blend 3\Samples to $/MIX09/Main/src/.

I then checked everything in.

I then went to each sample Project (for example NoteTable) and opened it in Visual Studio. When you first add a Visual Studio Solution/Project to version control via the Source Control Explorer it is unbound. When you open an unbound Solution/Project, Visual Studio will prompt you to see if you’d like to bind it.

After clicking yes, I then selected the Solution and Project so I could click the Bind button.

I’ve now bound this sample.

After clicking OK to close the Change Source Control dialog, I accepted the command to check-out the Solution and Project files.

I then checked the two files in with their new source control bindings.

I now started Blend 3.

Using the File | Open Project/Solution command.

I then navigated to C:\MIX09\Main\src\Samples\NoteTable and opened the NoteTable Solution.

Voila! Now after Blend opens things up, I see little lock glyphs in the Projects window.

Now, I can right-click on the Solution and select View History for This Item

I can now view the changeset details for this Solution (and thus any other files) directly from Blend!

Very nice. I expect more features and fun to show up before they ship, but for now this is a great step forward in the designer / developer workflow (or for many of us developer acting like designer / developer workflow).

And don’t forget, if you install the October 2008 TFS Power Tools, you can use the SCC Explorer plug-in to work with files directly on disk. Very useful if you’re using tools that don’t have TFS integration.

Enjoy!

Happy Holidays and look what Santa’s brought

As many know, one of the things I do is build and maintain virtual machine images for Microsoft. With the end of the year coming, two particular virtual machines, that are very dear to me, are about to expire. Something had to be done.

I’m happy to report that the VSTS virtual machines are all updated with fresh bits and expiration dates. You now can test and evaluate (since these images are NOT licensed for production use) Team System 2008 with SP1.

First off, the new expiration date is December 31, 2009.

Second, we didn’t produce two images this time. We produced FOUR!

That’s right, we’ve produced the same pair as before. A VSTS “all-up” image with Team Foundation Server, Team Build, Team Explorer, and Team Suite. And a TFS “only” image with just Team Foundation Server, Team Build, and Team Explorer.

What’s different is that we’ve produced both Virtual PC 2007/Virtual Server 2005 R2 compatible images AND Hyper-V compatible images. Download the ones that make you happy!

As part of the refresh and extending the expiration date, I’ve updated the images to include the following (naturally some items only appear in the “all-up” images):

the latest virtual machine additions or integration services components

all of the latest Windows Updates as of December 1, 2008

Team Foundation Server 2008 SP1

Visual Studio 2008 Team Suite SP1

Team System Web Access 2008 SP1

Team Foundation Power Tools, October 2008 update

the latest MSSCCI provider

Team Explorer 2005 (this allows you to work with TFS from Visual Studio 2005 which is installed so that you can edit and customize TFS reports)

the GDR for the product formally known as Visual Studio 2008 Database Edition (aka Data Dude)

current Process Explorer, Process Monitor, and Background Info

Naturally at this point, you’re wondering, where are the goods? Here they are:

VSTS “all-up” Virtual PC/Virtual Server image (6 GB download, expands to 15 GB)

TFS “only” Virtual PC/Virtual Server image (3 GB download, expands to 8 GB)

VSTS “all-up” Hyper-V image (6 GB download, expands to 15 GB)

TFS “only” Hyper-V image (3 GB download, expands to 8 GB)

The Virtual PC 2007/Virtual Server 2005 R2 compatible images provide VMC files for Virtual PC 2007 SP1 and Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Update. The VMC file that ends in –V7 is for Virtual PC and the one that ends in –R2 is for, well, Virtual Server.

The Hyper-V downloads only contain the VHD. You’ll need to configure them yourself. I wanted to make it as easy as possible.

And as a reminder, these images do not contain antivirus so follow your corporate policy before you bring them up on a network. That said, they are all built from the same base so duplicate IDs on a network is possible. Use Shared NAT or one of the many other options to get network access without causing problems.

Happy Holidays and enjoy!

Silverlight 2 RTW tomorrow and more goodness

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2008/oct08/10-13Silverlight2PR.mspx

ScottGu detailed a bunch of stuff this morning to the press including an October 14, RTW of Silverlight 2.

More goodness:

"Microsoft also announced further support of open source communities by funding advanced Silverlight development capabilities with the Eclipse Foundation’s integrated development environment (IDE) and by providing new controls to developers with the Silverlight Control Pack (SCP) under the Microsoft Permissive License."

Good times.

New Data Dude GDR is out

Gert's got all the details on his blog.

To me, the biggest point to latch on to is this:

This is the last CTP, we started our final descend, we will publish a public RC (release candidate) when it is ready, followed by the RTM release. The upcoming RC (release candidate) will be a "go-live" release. The two remaining areas the team is currently working on is performance and bugs, we are done with all work items.

It'll be nice to have a final version that I can use with SQL Server 2000, 2005, and 2008. Patience grasshopper, patience.

More News: Data Dude and Team Dev are now One!

If you go down the page here, you find some juicy goodness related to VSTS:

"Better Together – Visual Studio Team System Development Edition and Database Edition
In recognition of the increased need to integrate more of the lifecycle members together, we will provide a unified Development and Database product in Visual Studio Team System 2010.
I'm doing a pre-con on VSTS.

A big part of the pre-con is best practices and worst practices, or anti-patterns.

As I get things all nice and packed up into a nice package with a bow on top, I'm curious.

If you're coming to my pre-con, what do you want to know? What are you looking for? What would make your day?

In July, I did a .NET Rocks show and talked about Hyper-V and more.

Later I also did a Run As Radio show also on virtualization.

Finally in August, Martin Woodward and I did a Team System chat.

Enjoy.

OT: Lego Metallica Video--Whiplash!

Very OT and very funny: http://www.sarahlacy.com/sarahlacy/2008/08/stop-what-you-a.html

A quick look at the Microsoft.com downloads site and I don't see it yet for the .NET Framework 3.5 but I imagine soon.

Update:

.NET Framework SP1 is here.

VS is here .

And now TFS is showing up too here.

Got Scrum?

I lot of customers I work with want or are using Scrum with VSTS.

Many end up using the process template from Conchango.

I recently had a problem however getting it installed for a customer.

Their TFS installation is in the form on a single AT/DT server with SharePoint pointed at their MOSS installation. Their MOSS installation in turn was a FE+BE configuration with some custom DNS redirections and multiple site collections. When I did the Conchango install, everything said things were OK. However, when I ran the team project wizard, it would fail claiming that the templates were not installed in SharePoint. To make matters worse, the built-in templates worked fine for MSF-Agile and MSF-CMMI.

I pinged the kind folks at Conchango and we started trying different things. It turns the templates were installed, but not deployed.

To fix it, I logged into the SharePoint Cental Administration and clicked on the Operations Tab.

From there, I clicked on Solution Management under the Global Configuration options.

From there it was easy to see that the Conchango templates were installed but not deployed. Once I deployed them I was able to go to TFS and create a new team project using the Scrum template.

I have the power

No, not time for He-Man, just time for a mobile hardware upgrade.

I spend a good portion of my time working with virtual machines. And in doing so, I'm always looking for more power when I'm on the road.

This week I was able to make three great updates to my Lenovo T61p.

First, I upgraded my RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB. I had no issues. Just removed the old RAM and installed the new, rebooted and there it was in all its glory. FYI, you won't find 8 GB listed as an option on Lenovo's site yet or on many of the 3rd party RAM sites. However, just about any laptop using an Intel chip that truly supports 4 GB of RAM and uses the Santa Rosa platform or newer should support 8 GB just fine (YMMV).

Second, I upgraded to a new hard drive, Hitachi's 320 GB, 7,200 RPM monster. I always go for the fastest drive, then size. Watch when you go to upgrade your own. Some of the larger drives out there now are 12.5 mm, not the more common 9mm size used in most laptops.

Third, I installed a fresh copy of Window Server 2008 x64 and the RTM version of Hyper-V. Hyper-V is Microsoft's next generation virtualization technology (I'll blog more about it soon and why you care).

Now I just need to upgrade my VSTS VPC to Hyper-V and I'm ready to go.

I got my RAM from Kingston (FYI, it's on sale right now).

I got my hard drive from OWC (Currently has a $30 rebate)

So, get out there and pump some coin into the economy and feel the power.

A New Year Starts

Yes, it is July 1, 2008. and while it's not the traditional New Year, for me it is for two reasons. First, Microsoft has decided I didn't cause too much trouble over the last 12 months so I get to continue being a VSTS MVP. Thanks! Second, Microsoft starts their new fiscal year which means there's work to get busy on, now!

Speaking of new work this, I'll be doing a VSTS pre-con at the PDC this year in Los Angeles. Over the next few weeks, I'll expand on what I'm going to be talking about so if you're not busy on Sunday, October 26, come on down!

Also, I'll be flying down to South Africa for Tech Ed so if you're going to be in Durban, stop on by and say Hello.

Updated VSTS VPC Available

It's no April's Fool day joke.

A new all-up image has been posted. It's been updated with Office SP1, the December 2007 TFS Power Tools, and all Windows Updates.

It has 38 hands-on labs and if you look at the IT Governance lab, you'll find sample data to run reports against and use Excel against. The labs are inside under C:\MSLabs.

You can also download just the labs and their support files in a self-contained MSI.

Finally, the good news for many: it won't expire until December 31, 2008.

The TFS only image will be out in the next 12 to 36 hours.
