Dress Codes

It reminds me of the dress code that my ex-partner instituted at my previous company.

All instructors must wear long pants.

When I asked why we needed such a dress code, he explained that if an instructor couldn't handle the technical grilling that students often dish out, that the long pants would make a difference.

I'll be interested to see if Keith, Aaron, or Fritz bring their short pants to the Pluralsight gig this week.

With policies like that, I can see why a number of folks left DM. Now I'm upset and worried if the XML Web Services course I'm taking in a few weeks will be as good as the "Essential .NET" course I took with Ted Neward a couple years ago. The Newd Rocked!

As a former MCT, I can't even begin to describe how hilarious the statement, "if an instructor couldn't handle the technical grilling that students often dish out, that the long pants would make a difference" is to me. I haven't attended many ILT courses because...well, most of them suck quite frankly, and that opinion will not be swayed one way or the other due to how well the instructor was dressed. A well dressed idiot is still an idiot. I've met very well dressed instructors, and that was their only good quality (if that even counts, which it doesn't). For years, I had it in my mind that I would NEVER pay for ILT training until a certain badass instructor named Jason Masterman taught one at the Microsoft building in downtown Phoenix (I attended for free). After that I signed up for Guerilla .NET (which I paid for out of pocket BTW). Had Mike Woodring or Keith Brown been terrible instructors, wearing pants wouldn't have cut it for me as a customer. I would have been severely pissed. The fact is: if Masterman, Brown, or Woodring are teaching a course that I'm interested in taking (and have the $ for), they can teach in tight rubber shorts shorts for all I care, and I will still attend. The point: forget the pants policy, worry about having the best instructors. Just my $.02.

PS. Please don't tell those guys to wear tight rubber shorts. :-)

Is this guy for real, or is it just a gag?

Looks to me like that page is a gag. Or, in other words, a great way to get free advertising by people forwarding it around the internet saying "check this out!"

At my last company, the dress code was "Don't violate any public decency laws."

You saw some interesting stuff there.

There are numerous companies out there who believe it is crucial to maintain a professional appearance.

I, on the other hand, think it is more crucial to actually be a professional.

Thank goodness my current employer agrees.

My prior employer had an official dress code that read, "employees must wear shirt and shoes while entering and leaving the building."

He forgot: Must not look like a Chipmunk.

Alternatively: Must not look like this:

I don't think we should have a dress code, let people be themselves not a fake.
