I'm looking to switch brands for my next laptop - the T41P I'm typing this on is probably my last IBM machine.

I'd love to get a Sony, but the right form factors have limited hardware (I need at least 1.5G of ram given my Virtual PC addiction).

The last time I suggested buying a Powerbook, several people privately informed me that VPC performance would be very disappointing given the kind of stuff I do.

Ideally, I'd buy a non-Toshiba Tablet PC with 1.5-2GB of RAM, but I don't know of such a beast. I can't stand Toshiba keyboards, even though I rarely use the ~ key now that I've stopped programming in C++.

Ignoring the Tablet PC factor, the Dell Lattitude D400 seems close in terms of size/weight/performance, but I'm much more interested in the Alienware Sentia. I love Alienware's flexibility with respect to configuration - not to mention the fact that a max'ed out Sentia (2Ghz, 2GB ram, 100GB HD) is almost $800 less than 2Ghz/2GB/60GB Dell.

Any Alienware horror stories out there?

Mind you Don, at 5400rpm that 100Gb HD is not fast - you'll definitely notice the hit when running VPCs. Thats one of the reasons why I went for the Dell Precision M60 - you get a 7200rpm 60Gb HD. I do hear rumours that a 7200rpm 100Gb HD is on its way soon though

I did a lot of Dell equipment, but now switched to Acer. Top notch performance, especially since I'm hooked on VPC as well. Only drawback: 8kg weight.

No tablet PC? Scoble will have a heart attack.

I've always found Sonys to be too fragile for real work, after carrying it about for a month something will break, usually the screen and that's expensive. For me, I buy Toshibas :)

However work gave me a Dell D800, which is nice, except for the wide screen. Windows doesn't play well once it gets above 96DPI. System dialogs aren't resized, so text or buttons go missing and IE's default scaling of graphics is pants.

I did point the mother in law to the D400s, and she seems happy enough (once I reconfigured it so she was no longer administrator and culled the 100+ spyware executables off it). When I'm using it I find it too small, too light. It's hard to feel as if the keys are feeding back. If keyboards are your objection to buying Toshiba then you may well loathe the Dell. Also remember that if you want the full 100Gb that's two drives, so you'll be without the DVD/CD when using the second drive.

Finally, if you're using wireless and WPA-PSK both Dell and Toshiba cards have big problems dropping connections in under 5 minutes if your card is not using the Intel chipset. A registry hack fixes this, which I detailed at http://idunno.org/displayBlog.aspx/2004110601

Hmm, I'm looking for a laptop but I want a super hi res screen, lots of hard disk, loads of RAM. And needs to be quite rugged as I drag it around with me every day, and also as light as a feather.

What's the best machine given those requirements?

I too am interested in why this might be your last thinkpad. I am a loyal thinkpad owner, who also tries to switch the people around me. I find the quality far better then dell, sony, or toshiba, and the performance is usually also top notch (minus no "monster" offering like the XPS that I am aware of). Maybe it is just that fact that is enough to move you, but I drool over the specs on a T42P.

Alienware makes excellent machines. Had I not gotten such a steal on this Inspiron XPS, my next laptop would've definitely come from a botique dealer like Alienware.

i'm a happy thinkpad x23 user, so my usual recommendation of the x series won't do much good here, but i find they're excellent machines. i have an ex-colleague, however, who's been selling me on the virtues of alienware so i suspect you can't go too far wrong there. one other far out suggestion? moondoggie. if they're not vaporware - and at this point i'm inclined to think they are - they look cool.

I've owned and used from work several Dell's, (Expiron and Latitude) and they have performed extremely well. I had a Sony at another job and the screen-size was awesome, but it _was_ brittle as someone else mentioned.

I would go with the Dell. I have had excellent results for over 4 years now.

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron 8600. It's the fastest laptop I've used, I think because I made sure to get the 7200 RPM 60 gig drive. Every laptop I've used has always felt sluggish, even when they had near identical stats to a desktop. The only difference I could find was the HD speed.

Go with the Toshiba tablet. I have the M200 with 2GB RAM, 2GHz Dotham M chip, 60GB hard disk (7200 RPM). *Very* nice, *very* fast. VPCs fly on it.

You can get used to the Toshiba keyboard - just like you have gotten used to the VS editor. ;)
on 11-08-2004 9:26 AM
I have always been more than happy with my Sager. Performance/Configuration tends to be very close to Alienware, but at a considerably lower price. At the time I bought my NP5660, it was identical to the Area 51m (both even used identical chassis), but the Sager was nearly $1,000 cheaper.

http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.html

The only downside is that when you go for the max performance hardware, the weight and battery life can become troublesome (like with any laptop manufacturer).

Regarding running VPC... I actually run VMWare, but I find it performs better when I attach a 7200rpm external firewire drive and store my virtual machines there. Plus there is the handy side-effect that my VMs are instantly portable between laptop and desktop.

I wouldn't touch Sony again after recently getting burnt. I bought my Vaio desktop just two months ago with MCE 2004, and now they will not give me a MCE 2005 upgrade. It's completely unsupported. On top of that the drivers for their cards have got memory leaks and their support is rubbish.

As a developer I need not only a power laptop but also one that can drive two monitors. The only one I could find two years ago that did that is the one I am typing this on: Dell Precision M60. It can do its own and one external one OR with the help of D/Dock it can drive two *external* monitors (once docked). Its specs are still very impressive today. [TIP: Choose customise on dell's site to see full options]

When buying a laptop, I'd strongly advise you look at the vendors support history., ie. how often do they update their drivers, is their support site easy to use and updated with the latest drivers for all their machines. I've had experience with Acer being rather poor on this front with regards to their Ferarri 3200 laptop. So my advise is always check out the support site of the laptop vendor before committing to a machine.

I had done a good amount of work researching Alienware laptops. I even had some contact with Chris Anderson, who was doing all of his fancy "power and lights" demos (you were there with him on stage actually).

While the Alienware laptops seem amazing, I have seen a good number of negative reviews, particularly about the quality of work, and the lack of technical support to scare me from buying one for a while. I really, really would love to get one, but there are just ^too^ many negative comments out there. They aren't the majority, but it seems like when they go bad, they go horribly bad.

I just purchased an inspiron 600M which was about $300 less than the D600 (and has 64MB video vs 32MB).

Probably not an apples to apples comparison since I am sure the lattitudes have better support, but I doubt I will use the machine for 3 years.

As is always the case with dells, don't buy the Ram from dell. Get it configured with as little as possible then hop over to Crucial.com. 1 gig of ram (single chip) for the 600M is $350.

I went with the same concept and order the cheapest harddrive from Dell and then purchased a Hitatchi 60 gig 7200 RPM HD. Ironically, Dell had the best price for the drive. :)

What leads you to want to move away from IBM machines? Is there a particular aspect of the Thinkpad you're unhappy with?

Also, have you considered Linux? It's easier on memory.

Just kidding ;-)

Dell's don't hold up. Had an Inspiron 8100 that had tons 'o issues particularly with flaky wireless support. Bought a Toshiba M35-S201 in April. Best dang laptop ever owned. Built-in wireless that always works. Upgraded hard drive to a 7200 RPM. Jack location is ideal. Space on handrests is ample. Found it very helpful on rides on the train every morning to do work including writing code. Battery also holds up well. No issues since I bought it. Boss liked it so much, he went out an bought same model. Picked mine up from Circuit City for about $1600.

I got an HP zx5000 last year after my Sony bit it. P4 3.2HT, 1 Gb RAM 80 gb 7200 HD, 15.4" monitor 1920x1200. Love it....built-in bluetooth and a/b/g wireless work great...wouldn't trade the screen for anything....only down side is I would call it a luggable, built like a tank...I take it everywhere everyday. VPCs on external USB 2 or firewire drive work nicely.

Yeah, I'm with many others - go with the smaller 7200 RPM drive. My 5400 HD died one day so I upgraded it to a 7200, and it felt like a totally new machine.

As far as Alienware goes, gamer magazines last year gave it top marks as far as mobile gaming goes. The negatives were simply their weight. Otherwise, I have a few friends that have them, and swear by them. So, YMMV.

First, I'll say thanks for the training in 1997. You had long hair then and came in to our classroom ( I was with Newport News Shipbuilding) and I made some comment to an associate. We were in Torrence. Anyhow, when your Essential COM came out, you had cut that hair. Much better, I thought, lol.

I have a latitude now and I love it because of the weight and I'm actually running JBoss and doing all my testing on it. I have a gig of memory. It's a little flimsy for work, so I expect that we will break something this year. The Inspiron 7500's we had were a little stronger.

It's incredible what a little marketing hype will do to some people! Anyone remember RIMM memory? This RAM was pushed by Intel as the next best greatest thing since sliced bread, but at practically twice the cost of regular DIMM RAM! Seems like Intel has once again managed to convince some that a 1.5 - 2Ghz processor that uses less power is somehow equivalent to a 2.5 - 3Ghz processor! All I can say is... don't be fooled!
As for Sony products... In my opinion, over the last several years they have become a company where profits and bottom-line mean far more than quality and reliability! I have returned --and will never use again-- several Sony products including: cell phones, cordless phones, CRT monitors (both at home and in my college lab (15 CPG500 monitors)), mini-disks, etc, etc! I hate to say this about a once fine company, but Sony products are of poor reliability these days!
As for Dell... All I can say is my college issued Inspiron 8200 has had the hard drive replaced twice and the motherboard replaced 3 times! If you buy Dell, please factor into the total price, the 3 year extended warranty because you're going to need it! The best advice I have for anyone is: to do a little research into buying quality, reliable components and assembling the hardware yourself! This is even an option for laptops! www.pugetsystems.com
Good Luck all!

Have you guys considered Panasonic Toughbooks?

By far the best notebooks I've ever used.

I've used and personally owned, IBMs, Toshibas, Compaqs, Dells, Sagers, and of course Panasonic. My last 6 laptops were Pans.

Panasonic also makes a reliable semi-ruggedized tablet as well.

Panasonic comes with the 3 year support and they are very good with support.

Of all the computers, the only times I had problems was installing Win2k and wiped out the BIOS based hibernation partition.

With the exception of maybe the IBMs, I think anyone who uses a Panasonic, even for a short time will be a new Convert.

The US military, local Police, and Government Utilities can't be all wrong! (Despite whether or not you agree with their politics).

I have an Mtech D700T, and it has been an absolute nightmare. The motherboard fried on me, so I sent it back. They replaced it under warranty, but the computer still did not work after I got it back. I sent it back again, but this time they said nothing was wrong with it and they sent it back to me. I reformatted, and the computer still does not work. They also use UPS ground shipping from California that you must pay for, so this whole process has taken more than six weeks up until now. Realize that the reason these laptops are cheap is because they are of poor quality, and the company lacks any kind of efficiency. You get what you pay for.
