Googlies?

I just passed a bookshelf in my living room and noticed the ".NET My Services" reference manual (yes, we actually shipped an MS Press book even though the technology never saw the light of day).

Naturally, seeing the book made me think of MarkL and Google, and I wondered what they call people who work at Google.

People call folks who work at Microsoft "Microsofties."

Are Google people called Googlies, as in "great googlie mooglie?"

They might call them Goolies - but that doesn't translate so well to the UK ;-)

Well, for the cricket playing nations, a googly is a rather tricksey bit of bowling...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport/hi/english/static/in_depth/cricket/2001/spin_bowling/googly.stm

A googly, or a "wrong'un", is a delivery which looks like a normal leg spinner but actually turns towards the batsmen, like an off break, rather than away from the bat.

If you are a new to google, you are called a "Noogler".

Everone else is called a "Googler".

I still have my copy of that book too :)

Thanks for the update Mark.

Given that Google is effectively a verb that people use to describe using your excellent search service, aren't I a googler when i use google.com to search the internet?

I really think Googlie is much more "exclusive" sounding.

Hey Box,

My brother created custom game in Halo. It's called "Rocky." Everyone starts off with a plasma gun that can't be used (under penalty of boot), no grenades, no shields, and the only way you can attack someone is by hitting them in the designated area of the map. Two more important rules are that you can't camp on the outskirts of the designated area and once you're in the designated area, you can't jump out.

The reason I'm telling you this is because I have my homepage set to your blog and I would like to take a few whacks at you for this brain-rotting entry. My gamer tag is "SomeoneSmarter." ;)

If you log in to bungie.net and check out the game viwer, you'll be able to see the mayhem that is "Rocky":

Actually, I like this post. It is very thought-provoking. How long before you post again so it's not the topmost entry? lol. I'm joking, of course. I enjoy your blog.

Man, I love the stuff you Microsofties are doing. I've been following Indigo for the past year or so, maybe longer. When are we going to see you and Anderson do some more demos on MSDNTV?

A year? Are you kidding? I have followed it for over 5 years. I hear it will ship any day :)

"maybe longer"... I am in a time vacuum. 2002 is the first record of my interest in the project to create a unified messaging subsystem. Solid talks in 2003 piqued my interest and I've been watching it very closely ever since. Wow, 5 years. That's something. I heard it will ship for all 3 versions of Windows simultaneously (sometime 2006.)

I remember reading that book in a San Francisco library. Incidently, I am kind of looking for the specs for WINFS -- they seem to have been moved since they were unceremoniously taken from Longhorn (I would like to model some data persistence on the schemas that I am sure MarkL and company worked out).
Don, if you are short on cash you could always sell that book for $0.09 on Amazon.

I'm counting on Hailstorm memorabilia to fetch top dollar once Mark builds Gailstorm (or is it Gale Storm?) from sunny California :-)

How about a 'Plex'? That way we could greet them with the question "Are you a Google Plex?".

Googlies reminds me of cricket - the game. Maybe this is apt for people who work at google - they do seem to be bowling googlies...

I dropped the SomeoneSmarter Xbox Live gamertag and went back to my original "DotNetFX" tag in case anyone wants to add a fellow developer to their friends list.

Cheers.
