Two things I miss in Vista

I've been running Vista Ultimate on all of my machines since it was released last year, and generally I'm very happy with the new features. I would find it frustrating to move back to XP after becoming accustomed to pervasive search, the sidebar with all of its gadgets, the simplified networking, the lovely aero [1] Windows experience, the integrated photo gallery, launching applications from the search box on the start menu, the grouping and stacking in explorer, etc.

There are however two features I find myself missing in day-to-day work that I used to use frequently in XP:
  1. The first is when I'm in an explorer window, selecting a directory and hitting Ctrl-Enter used to launch a new explorer window opened to that directory. I used this all the time to essentially bookmark a location I needed to keep open to transfer/work with files, while continuing my navigation in the primary window.
  2. The second is the ability to detach the Quick Launch toolbar from the Task bar. I used to keep the Quick Launch bar oriented vertically on the left side of my screen as a convenient way to launch common applications, leaving the taskbar with plenty of space to show notification icons in the system tray and running applications. I can't seem to detach the Quick Launch bar from the task bar anymore in Vista, so they are forced to be colocated at the bottom of my screen (I can move the entire bar, but not the QuickLaunch bar separately).

If anyone has a solution to either of these issues, I'd love to hear them!

[1] Did you know Aero is supposedly an acronym, standing for Authentic, Energetic, Reflective, and Open? At least according to Windows Vista: The Missing Manual, from which I've picked up quite a few tips and recommend as a way of filling out holes in your knowledge of Vista.

I really miss this too!

You could use an application launch toolbar for the sidebar.

Hey, that works! Thanks Dan. It turns out you can drag any folder on the desktop near the edge and it turns into a toolbar - very slick!

Ctrl-N works (like in IE) - not quite the same but a workaround...

The Vista Sidebar applet is called App Launcher and can be found here:

My comment above doesn't really make sense :) I somehow missed that Dan was talking about the sidebar (I have tried the app launch gadget for the sidebar, but it's not quite what I want). Instead what I did was open Vista help for 'application launch toolbar' and item #14 was 'Create a shortcut toolbar on the desktop' which turned out to be a way of creating exactly what I want - a toolbar docked to the side of my screen with one-click application shortcuts.

And thanks Dom, for Ctrl-n, I'd forgotten about that shortcut - not quite what I wanted, but it'll do for now.

If you shift-right-click on a folder in the contents pane of an explorer window you find a secret menu item to "Open Command Window Here". Very useful. Not sure why we worked so hard to hide it. This trick also adds a "Copy As Path" menu item which I also find myself using quite a bit.

Dave - those are the two best shortcuts I have heard of in Vista yet, thanks! I no longer need to run my .reg script to install the 'run cmd prompt here' anymore :)

Fritz - How about using Window Key+E? Probably my favorite shortcut

Mark - one of my favorites too, I use it all the time. However, I liked using Ctrl-Enter in a different context - to open a window at a specific location as I was navigating. Windows-E always brings up the root.

Solution to #1:

Minimize the "Folders" pane on the left side of your explorer window. Then the Ctrl+Enter works.

Ahh - that's great Nick, it works again, thanks! Now, I wonder if I can get the folders pane to default to minimized...

About the freaking tree view. If you do Alt+Enter in Windows XP, it shows directory properties, no such functionality in Windows Vista. You have to right click to select properties. A nightmare for keyboard lovers like me.

Is there anyways to Make the new Toolbar, that was created by dragging a folder to the side , transparent like the task bar?

Thankjs again for all the tips here. I love it.
