I know that readers of this blog and the other blogs on this site are looking for technical discussions but I hope you'll allow me this personal digression.

Like many of us, I've had pets my whole life; I've historically been a dog person having had 3 German Sheppard dogs growing up. More recently, my wife and I have two cats; some of you might already be aware of this fact if you happen to have seen the kitty bloggers.

In recent years, my wife and I have started including donations to the SPCA and a few different animal rescues throughout the country along with the other charities we support. This has been driven largely by our developing awareness of animal cruelty and irresponsible pet ownership.

Over the weekend, I received information from one of the animal charities regarding one of the most extreme cases of animal cruelty that I could ever imagine.

Some… jerk (I'm keeping my language in check for the forum) decided to literally burn an animal's entire front-left paw & leg down to an ashen crisp. They also slashed all the way through her rear leg muscles so deeply that the back leg needs to be amputated.

An animal that just a few days ago was entirely healthy now must have 2 limbs amputated because some… jerk … thought it'd be funny to torture her.

I was going to include the picture of the animal here but I don't want to force it on you. If you're interested you can see the picture here (again be aware the picture can be hard to look at).

This post was conceived largely as a way for me to vent my frustrations at such an incredible act of cruelty. While typing the post though, something occurred to me. As cruel as this person was to the animal mentioned, many of us condemn far more animals to harsh lives of living in the streets often starving to death, dying of illness and other dangers caused by irresponsible pet ownership practices or failing to spay/neuter our pets.

As my last point, I just ask that you consider the long-term responsibility of getting a pet and be sure you are up for the task; they pee, poop, get sick, and need lots of attention every day (it's unreasonable to expect that your children will be able to bear the entire responsibility of caring for a pet) … please, please spay/neuter your pets. I'm not a pet-rights zealot, I just don't want to see anyone or anything suffer unnecessarily.

My apologies for the off topic post - back to regular business tomorrow.

My sincere hope is that they have the individual that did this in custody and will be charging him with animal cruelty.

Greg post, 3 dogs, a cat and a fish here. Hopefully at least one person will listen.

I'd like to add that if you do go get a pet, consider going to an animal shelter or pet rescue. Pet rescue has dogs that are considered 'unadoptable' because they may have one of the following 'defects':

1. Over 4 years old (true in Chicagoland)
2. Fatty tumor (always not an issue-- people get these too)

I've always gotten dogs from shelters/pet rescue because these dogs are usually great pets. While what happened here is unusually cruel, keep in mind that this is an aberration.

Also, know that the reason we, as a community, watch out for animal cruelty is because we know that this frequently progresses to human cruelty.

Great point Scott!!

Both our cats are from local rescues here in the New Hampshire area. They too were considered "difficult" cases because one was 5 years old and seem to have some kind of food allergy; the other was just a little over a year old but was having some difficulty with skin irritation.

Once we brought them home, got them some basic vet care and put them on a proper diet, all of their "issues" went away. We've had "the boyz" as we call 'em for 5 years & 4 years respectively … they couldn't be healthier.

They've been great additions to our home. Being a person who had never even considered having a cat previously, I just can't believe how much fun and how affectionate they are.

To reiterate what Scott said, if you are considering a pet, take a trip to the local animal shelter, animal rescue, or SPCA. You’ll be amazed at the incredible number of dogs, cats, ferrets, etc. that are looking for homes. By far, most of these animals are happy & healthy and are in the shelters for no fault of their own.

Thanks to everyone who has posted feedback.

Hi Jim,

Thanks so much for posting this. We have added this case to the Pet-Abuse.Com database of animal cruelty, listed here:
http://www.pet-abuse.com/cases/10550/CA/US/

We have also contacted some of the larger animal welfare organizations in the hopes of pooling a reward fund together for the arrest and conviction of whoever did this.

We appreciate your compassion, and your efforts to bring this terrible case to light.

You're so right! I own a dog, two cats, fish, a rabbit and a chicken, and so I know first hand the effort involved in looking after animals. If pet owners are not prepared to take the responsibility for their pets then they should not be permitted to keep them.

As for the cruel 'B' that mistreated this poor unfortunate animal.. prison isn't enough, perhaps he should have a critical part of his anatomy amputated. I have a few suggestions.
