Version compatibility is always an issue as new product versions are released and SQL Server Compact is no exception - As mobile developers, we now find ourselves with 4 versions of SQL Server Compact commonly in use...
- SQL Server CE 2.0
- SQL Server Mobile Edition (SQL Server CE 3.0)
- SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (SQL Server CE 3.1)
- SQL Server Compact 3.5 (SQL Server CE 3.5)
With so many versions in use, all tools can't work with everything - for example...
- Visual Studio 2005 data designers don't work with SQL Server CE 3.5
- Visual Studio 2008 data designers only work with SQL Server CE 3.5
And this is just the beginning.
The good news is that the folks over in the SQL Server Compact team put together a Connectivity Cross Version Compatibility Guide which they released on this past Tuesday. The guide will probably be in the regular SQL Server Compact docs someday; however, for expediency the current version of the guide is available at the the SQL Server Compact team's blog.
If you use any version of SQL Server Compact, you'll wanna have a look.
