Recovering lost windows

Given the way I use Windows, I often run into situations where windows will end up off screen and I need to get them back where I can see them. This is usually because of the way I use my dual monitors and switch one between machines. Regardless, this technique will come in handy if you've not used it before.

1) Activate the window. This may take some guesswork if the window doesn't show up on your taskbar. Either click it on your task bar, or ALT-TAB until you think you've activated the one you want.

2) Press ALT+SPACE followed by m (for “Move“). This will move the mouse to the center of the title bar of the window. You could use the keyboard to move the window if you wanted to, but we'll use the mouse instead. If you can see the window on your taskbar, you can right-click and select “Move“ instead if you prefer.

3) Carefully, without moving the mouse, click down to grab the window and drag it back to your desktop. As long as the window isn't ridiculously far away (i.e., the application is buggy and has placed your window millions of pixels away from where your desktop is, you'll be all set. For me, I usually know right where my lost windows are (over to the left where my second monitor would normally display them), so I just drag over to the right and I'm set.

If (3) isn't working for you, the window may be maximized. Press ALT+SPACE followed by r (for “Restore“). This will restore the window if it's maximized somewhere (another monitor perhaps). Then go to (2) and try again.

I hope this helps somebody.

You can also use the arrow keys once you've done alt-space m to move the window.

This annoys the hell out of me and happens all the time. The VPC console window does this. Oh, and so does Password Minder. :)

Craig: Yep - it wasn't until recently I realized I could just grab the silly window with the mouse.

Peter: That bug in Password Minder was fixed awhile back - get the latest version, dude ;-)

The ALT+SPACE trick is new to me. I usually right-click in the taskbar, but that is not always possible.

You can also use the arrow keys *before* clicking the window, press ALT+SPACE, m, then use any of the arrow keys. Once you have done this, the mouse is locked to the window and will drag the window until you click the mouse.

Cool! It was a torture if I forget to move all windows to primary monitor when leaving office, then coming home and not able to get to non-primary-monitor windows via terminal server.
Thanks.

You don't need multiple monitors to lose a window.

If the window's button in the task bar has also been lost, then another way to bring back the application is to open Windows Task Manager to its Applications tab, select the application, and click the Switch To button. In my experience this usually restores a minimized application and then shortly afterwards restores its task bar button.

Of course if the window is off the screen then you'll still have to proceed to the other tricks to bring it on screen. But I haven't had this problem very much in Windows XP.

Thank you! My windows often start up off screen to the right even when my secondary monitor is to the left! Go figure. When I right-clicked the taskbar button and chose move, the mouse would be positioned on the edge of the screen, so clicking and dragging didn't work. The only thing I could do was maximize, until I saw your note about using the keyboard. It only seems to work if you use the keyboard shortcuts.

Thanks. The only thing that worked for me was the Alt-Space M and the arrow keys. When I did that the lost window popped into view. It was oddly configured when it showed up -- very wide and not very high.

Thanks - The only thing that worked for me in Windows 98 was the Alt-Space and arrow key approach. Norton System Doctor (from NU Version 3) kept moving vertically up the screen with each restart. Normally I would just drag it back each time, but not everybody in the family was so inclined....

Thanks! I had lost the Directory window from Netmeeting and even the alt-move wasn't getting me anywhere. Don's comments about the arrow keys finally got the mouse on the menu bar and then the window followed the mouse clicks - all was well.

Thanks for the tip!

Thanks, it was the arrow keys that did for me... After hitting any of the arrow keys you can then just move the mouse around until your window shows up.

I heard that you can change window values with Spy++ (Comes with microsoft compilers) but the person didn't go into much detail. I have Spy++, but not really sure how to use it to recover windows. If people knew they could recover windows even millions of pixels away, or windows that they don't know locations to.

Yessss! Used it for Adobe suite... it always loses friggin "save as" windows when working in dual screen setups.

Wonderful :-)

I know, this is an old post. Still - it just saved me no end of grief caused by the elimination of a dual-monitor setup. I had Quickbooks windows opening way off the screen and could not for the life of me figure out how to mouse them back. It took several different googlings but here I am... and delighted to have my windows back. Thanks!

Works -- but note that for non-English installations the Alt-Blank m will need different letters. E.G. for German setup, it will be Alt-Blank v .

There must also be another way to normalize the screen position data in the registry, but that may well be application-dependent. I could not find anything that "smelled" like screen coordinates for ActiveSynch, whose window occasionally moves to a different galaxy.

THANKS!!!

lt + space + m
then arrow key
then move mouse

did it for me!

alt + space + x maximized the window on my screen, so I knew it was there, but there doesn't seem to be a way to resize the maximized window to make it forget it's old offscreen position

I have simply lost button bar, which means that to navigate between open windows I have to use alt+tab. I would prefer to get back button bar somehow. who could tell me anything?
thanks in advance

I stumbled on this solution by dumb luck - None of the above worked for me as I had lost an application way off my secondary monitor. I went to task manager, selected 2 applications by ctrl-clicking on the lost application and any other application (doesn't matter which), and then selected 'tile horizontally' - and there it was. Hope this helps someone else.

Awesome.. this was the only way I could regain focus of an app on a multi desktop that only showed "Move or Close" on right click on taskbar.

Neat! I didn't realize you could select from that list and tile/cascade/etc only certain windows. Good to know!

Using Magic DVD Ripper, I don't have the Move option. I only have "Restore", "Minimize" and "Close". Is there a way to deal with this?

You can also use the arrow keys *before* clicking the window, press ALT+SPACE, m, then use any of the arrow keys. Once you have done this, the mouse is locked to the window and will drag the window until you click the mouse.

--THANK YOU! Man. I've been trying to move it using the mouse, but it didn't work. Thanks!
