Wells Fargo Opt Out 800 Number

I have been a happy customer of Wells Fargo for a couple of years now, but one thing has always bothered me: being solicited by loosely affiliated companies. Well, I finally found out how to fix this. I called 888.528.8460, which is their "privacy preference line". From there I was able to opt out of all solicitation for new services.

We'll see how well it works.

I'm not a crazy environmentalist, but waste makes me cringe. I make it a habit to contact companies that mail me catalogs that I don't read, telling them to take me off of their lists. I also do little things like bring a couple of bags to the grocery store every time I go in order to avoid generating more plastic waste.

The other day, I was buying my son a sweatshirt in T.J. Maxx, and the clerk popped it into a plastic bag. I said, "Thanks, but I really don't need that bag." He promptly balled it up and threw it in the trash. It makes me sad how so many people just don't get it. If everyone would just think a little bit about this in their daily lives, I think it'd make a big difference for the world we leave to our kids and grandkids.

Heh, I know what you mean. But over here in the UK supermarkets have recently begun a policy of not handing out bags for your shopping, if you want / need some you have to explicitly ask for them. Some of them even provide extra loyalty points if you bring your own carriers when you shop.

A small step, but we only get anywhere in small steps don't we?

The world does not belong to us, we are merely holding it in trust for our children!

Hello Keith,

About your term "loosely affiliated companies" - there's no such thing, a company is an affiliate of the bank or it not. There are separate privacy laws that regulate sharing of customer information with affiliates and with non-affiliated third parties; and these two forms of sharing have separate opt-outs. You said that in your call to the bank's privacy office, you opted out of "all solicitation" so perhaps you did get both covered. But everyone should be aware of these separate categories of customer information sharing and their separate opt-outs as well.

Thank you for the Wells Fargo number; I was unable to find it, and my local branch (which is miles away from home) did not have the number on file.

As someone who deals with banks on a daily basis, I have to clarify Laura's statements - the banks do, and will explicitly share this information with these affiliate companies, but they're doing so through a known policy.  I believe the bank was stating the "loosely affiliated companies" as being these affiliates, rather than their "in shop" marketing, such as their recent attempts to sell me a "personal banking assistant" for $5.95/mo for the last three weeks.

I think it is ridiculous that you have to "opt out" of being harrased by telemarketers affiliated with Wells Fargo.  If they really valued their customers they would not share our information with companies who will torment us with phone calls trying to sell us worthless products.  Their privacy policy states that they do not share their customers' information but in the next line it says they will share it in order to market Wells Fargo pruducts and services.  So does this mean that Wells Fargo owns AIG and similar companies?
