Four intensive days learning how to take advantage of the latest features in SQL Server 2005

SQL Server 2005 is the latest version of SQL Server. It enhances its database functionality and greatly expands its application to XML, .NET, and web services. SQL Server 2005 can be viewed as a data store for relational and XML data and even as a highly secure, reliable, and scalable application server.

This course covers the wide range of technologies added or enhanced in SQL Server 2005 starting with database topics such as the T-SQL language, the database engine, and security enhancements. The new XML data type including support for XML Schema and XQuery; using .NET inside of SQL Server to extend it; and ADO.NET that is used inside SQL Server as well as on the client, and provides features like scoped transactions rounds out the coverage.

The delta between SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 is too great to be absorbed by just reading the Books Online. This course will give you the hands-on foundation you need to maximize its use in your applications.

Highlights
  • Overview of SQL Server Management Studio
  • Visual Studio enhancements for SQL Server 2005
  • Security improvements - schemas, encryption, execution context
  • T-SQL improvements - exceptions, recursive queries
  • Engine improvements - large data types, snapshot isolation
  • Hosting the CLR - C# as secure, reliable, and scalable as T-SQL
  • Extending SQL Server with the CLR
  • The XML data type
  • SQL Programming Model - ADO.NET on client and server
  • ADO.NET providers
  • Native web services

Who Should Attend

This course is targeted at developers of databases and the applications that use them. This release of SQL server is meant to expand the range of developers who use SQL Server. This is not a DBA oriented course, but it will be of interest to DBA’s who do some development, so that they can prepare for new uses of the databases they administer.

Questions this course will answer:

  • What are the advantages of snapshot isolation?
  • How can I encrypt data on a per-user basis?
  • How can I securely execute dynamic SQL when someone else owns the table I want to use?
  • How can I insure that CLR based code doesn’t compromise my database?
  • When should I use the CLR in SQL Server?
  • How do I index XML data?
  • How can I make an XML document a PRIMARY KEY?
  • When should I consider making a user defined type?
  • What are the limitations of SQL Notifications?

Prerequisites:

You should know the basics of SQL or be familiar with C#. The labs are in C# for the CLR portions for the course. You should know basic XML syntax. Because this release of SQL Server covers such a wide technology spectrum there is no requirement to have a strong background in SQL, CLR and XML, but you should be competent in at least one of them.

What you should expect to learn:

You will learn how to use the enhancements that have been added to SQL Server 2005. These include the additional functionality added to T-SQL, XML and large data types, improved security, improved ANSI compliance, extending SQL Server using CLR languages, and using new features added to ADO.NET.
