The software formerly known as Softimage|3D, Softimage|XSI, Softimage XSI and then just Softimage officially came to an end today. From Microsoft to Avid, Softimage has seen a myriad of owners before finally being bought by Autodesk in 2008. Because Autodesk already owned 3ds Max and Maya at that point, the acquisition of Softimage instantly sparked rumors Softimage was doomed. Of course, the same was said when Autodesk acquired Alias (including Maya). Despite the rumors, Softimage weathered the storm and continued to gain traction and a loyal fan base. As one of the first 3D programs we taught, Softimage will always hold a place in the hearts of the artists here at Digital-Tutors.
