Working from scratch, Duncan leveraged pluralsight to learn HTML5, C#, Entity framework and other languages in order to create a professional grade software suite for nutritionists.
Nutritionist and Founder of foodzone.com.au | Blue Mountains, Australia
I’m a nutritionist, but as much as I love nutrition, as a practitioner, I can only see so many people face to face. Through technology, I can impact more people.
I decided I wanted to make software for nutritionists. I hired a local friend to build it for me and quickly realized I had no idea what he was doing. I thought it would be really handy to understand the developer’s process, but using in-class training took too long, and my friend didn’t have the time to teach me everything he was working on. He recommended I take a look at Pluralsight.
Pluralsight was a low investment for me. It didn’t require that I commit to several months of work, and it allowed me to continue doing what I love as a nutritionist. With the training I received from Pluralsight, I was able to build the front end of my software.
If I didn’t have Pluralsight, I don’t think I would have been able to accomplish what I have so far. I wouldn't be where I am now without completely changing careers. Pluralsight allowed me to pursue both of my dreams.
I set out to build a professional nutrition software. I started from scratch (well almost, I could make a WordPress site). We launched a month ago: foodzone.com.au. I didn’t make all of the site myself, but I managed to make the front end with Bootstrap, basic CSS and HTML5. It was the understanding I had from learning C#, Web Forms, Entity Framework and many others that has helped me collaborate with my programmers to create an effective team and product.
The software I built is primarily for nutritionists to use as a tool to track their client’s nutrition. I love my industry and making stuff, so building this tool was a natural fit for me. Now that I’ve successfully built one program, I can see myself branching out and creating technology-based tools for other areas too.
What do you like most about Pluralsight?
I think Pluralsight is pretty much perfect. I’m a huge fan. It offers so many courses and a lot of flexibility.
I learn by watching, and although I also use a coach for learning web development, I find that Pluralsight’s videos are much more efficient because they’re so concise.
