Using CloudWatch Dashboards to Monitor Resource Utilization

Welcome to this AWS hands-on lab. We will create and configure multiple custom AWS CloudWatch dashboards and widgets to monitor our resource utilization.

  1. Challenge

    Create a Custom CloudWatch Dashboard

    1. In the CloudWatch console, select Dashboards.
    2. Create a Dashboard, and add the name BHCPUUTILIZATION.
    3. Click Create Dashboard.
    4. Select the Line Widget.
    5. Select the EC2 metrec, and choose Per-Instance Metrics.
    6. Now, search for CPUUTILIZATION and select the BH EC2 instance.
    7. Customize the time interval to 15 minutes.
    8. Create the widget and select Save Dashboard.
  2. Challenge

    Create the Second Custom Dashboard

    1. In the CloudWatch console, select Dashboards.
    2. Create a Dashboard, and add the name APPCPUUTILIZATION.
    3. Click Create Dashboard.
    4. Select the Stacked widget.
    5. Add the metric for EC2, and select Per-Instance Metrics.
    6. Now search for CPUUTILIZATION and select the two wordpress EC2 instances and the RDS instance.
    7. Customize the time interval to 15 minutes.
    8. Create the widget, and select Save Dashboard.
  3. Challenge

    Add an Additional Widget to the Custom Dashboard

    1. Click Add Widget.
    2. Select the Number widget.
    3. Select the metric for Application ELB, then click on Per AppELB Metrics, and select RequestCount.
    4. Create the widget and save the dashboard.
    5. Select Add Widget
    6. Choose the Line widget.
    7. For metrics, select EC2 again, and then Per-Instance Metrics.
    8. Search for NetworkIn and again select our two wordpress EC2 instances and our database instance
    9. Save the dashboard.
