Want to test out your rubber part design without paying for an expensive one-off sample from a model shop? This course will show you how to do this. In this course, SOLIDWORKS Mold Tools: 3D Printing a Mold, you'll learn how to design a part so that it can easily molded and 3D printed. First, you'll start off with using SOLIDWORKS to prepare your design and making sure it will be easier to remove from your printed mold. Next, you'll leverage the SOLIDWORKS Mold Tools features Parting Line, Parting Surface, Shut Off Surface, and Tooling Split to create the core and cavity of your mold. Finally, you'll see how to use Smooth-On 2-part silicone rubber compound inside your 3D printed mold. When you're finished with this course, you'll know how to make your own injection molds in SOLIDWORKS, 3D print them, and inject them yourself to create accurate and useful rubber prototypes. Software required: SOLIDWORKS.

Hi everyone, my name is Robert Murdock and welcome to my course SOLIDWORKS Mold Tools: 3D Printing a mold

I am a _Mechanical Engineer in the Consumer Electronics Industry.

Validating your designs is important. 3D printed rubbers have come a long way but they don’t have the same mechanical or thermal properties of actual silicone rubber. Learning to make your own silicone samples will enable you to gather more accurate information from your prototypes.

In this course, we are going to design a part so that it can be easily molded, design the mold in SolidWorks and 3D print it, then use the mold to create a real silicone part using a 2-part silicone rubber compount.

Some of the major topics that we will cover include:

  1. Design for Manufacture as it pertains to this type of mold
  2. SolidWorks Mold Tools
  3. 3D Printing
  4. The shop procedure for using the mold
By the end of this course or By the end this course, you’ll know _how to make your own mold and how to use them.

Before beginning the course you should be familiar with Solidworks Modeling Software and a very basic understanding of 2 part molds.

I hope you’ll join me on this journey to learn Silicone Prototype building with the SOLIDWORKS Mold Tools: 3D Printing a moldcourse, at Pluralsight.
