Understanding how to build materials is a fundamental skill. In this course, Unreal Engine 4 Materials Fundamentals, you'll learn the material fundamentals for Unreal Engine 4, how to build many materials, provide a huge number of resources and jumping off points to rapidly get you building amazing materials. First, you'll discover physically based shading. Next, you'll explore core nodes for building materials and masking techniques. Then, you'll learn about translucent, world space normal maps, decals, vertex painting, double sided, and animated materials. Finally, you'll cover how to control materials with blueprints. Course Overview
Hi everyone, my name is Shaun Foster and welcome to my course Unreal 4 Materials Fundamentals. I'm a professor of 3D digital design at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Understanding how to build materials is a fundamental skill. Beyond Unreal, the skills you will learn here will translate to building materials in other 3D programs, dedicated shading programs as well as other node-based compositing programs. In this course we are going to build many materials, provide a huge number of resources and jumping off points to rapidly get you building amazing materials. Some of the major topics that we will cover include physically based shading, core nodes for building materials, multiply, add lerps and texture images, masking techniques, translucent world space normal maps, decals, vertex painting, double sided and animated materials, as well as controlling materials with blueprints. By the end of this course you'll know a flexible toolkit of skills for how to build a wide variety of materials and accelerate and optimize your material workflows. Since this is an intro course, very little Unreal 4 knowledge is necessary, but previous 3D or Unreal 4 basics would help. From here you should feel comfortable diving into courses on intermediate or advanced Unreal materials, Substance Painter, Quixel, nDo or dDo.
