What you'll learn

Understanding how to build materials is a fundamental skill. In this course, Unreal Engine 4 Materials Fundamentals, you'll learn the material fundamentals for Unreal Engine 4, how to build many materials, provide a huge number of resources and jumping off points to rapidly get you building amazing materials. First, you'll discover physically based shading. Next, you'll explore core nodes for building materials and masking techniques. Then, you'll learn about translucent, world space normal maps, decals, vertex painting, double sided, and animated materials. Finally, you'll cover how to control materials with blueprints. By the end of this course, you'll have a flexible toolset of skills for how to build a wide variety of materials. Software required: Unreal Engine 4.

About the author

Shaun Foster is an assistant professor of 3D Digital Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. He received his Masters in Fine Arts at RIT in 2002. He worked at 4 Directions Productions as manager of Animation and was also Lead Effects Artist there. He worked on multiple award-winning national and regional TV programs, advertising, and the successful 3D animated short, Raccoon and Crawfish.
