Decoupling Date and Time in C#

Time-dependent logic can make .NET systems fragile and hard to test. This course will teach you how to decouple time, work with UTC and local business dates, safely persist time, and build idempotent workflows.

What you'll learn

Modern .NET applications often depend on date and time logic for subscription expiration, billing, scheduled jobs, retries, and user-facing "today" behavior, which can become fragile when code depends directly on system time or assumes all systems share the same clock and time zone. In this course, Decoupling Date and Time in C#, you'll gain the ability to design testable, time zone-aware, and resilient time-dependent .NET workflows. First, you'll explore how direct calls to DateTime. Now, delays, timers, and scheduled jobs create hidden dependencies and non-deterministic behavior — and how to replace them with TimeProvider and deterministic tests. Next, you'll discover how to model UTC instants, local business dates, user time zones, persistence boundaries, and UI representation without accidentally shifting dates or losing time semantics. Finally, you'll learn how to design batch jobs, retries, and idempotent workflows so that partial failures and repeated execution don't corrupt business data. When you're finished with this course, you'll have the skills and knowledge of date-and time-dependent design in .NET needed to build systems that remain predictable under testing, correct across time zones, and reliable when production workflows fail or retries occur.
