What you'll learn

Organizations collect data across applications, departments, and processes, but collecting data is not the same as managing it. Without clear ownership, shared definitions, quality controls, metadata, privacy practices, and lifecycle rules, enterprise data becomes fragmented, risky, and difficult to trust.

In this course, Introduction to Enterprise Data Management, you’ll gain the ability to explain what enterprise data management is and how it helps organizations make data more reliable, governed, secure, and useful. First, you’ll explore the purpose of EDM and how it differs from related concepts such as data governance, data architecture, data operations, and analytics. Next, you’ll discover the core EDM capabilities, including data governance, quality, metadata, master data, security, privacy, and lifecycle management. Then, you’ll learn how to evaluate common enterprise data challenges by connecting symptoms such as duplicate records, conflicting metrics, unclear ownership, and weak lineage to the management gaps behind them. Finally, you’ll learn how to recommend realistic improvements by balancing centralization, federation, domain ownership, business impact, risk, and maturity.

When you’re finished with this course, you’ll have the skills and knowledge of enterprise data management needed to recognize enterprise data problems, explain why they matter, and propose practical next steps for improving data as a business asset.
