Your Career: Where You Are and Where You Want to Go Welcome to the How to Get Your Next Promotion course on Pluralsight. My name is Jason Alba and I'm the owner and CEO of JibberJobber. com. JibberJobber. com is a CRM for job seekers. I created this course to help you prepare for your next promotion. I draw upon my own experiences with getting promotions as well as my experience as a boss and a hiring manager. I'll share ideas that I've picked up over the years that should help you with your next promotion. Many of the tactics I share can be implemented for your short-term goals, including that promotion you hope to get in the next couple of days, and everything I talk about can help you with your long-term goals. The problem is, I don't know if you have an interview coming up in a couple of days or if you're a couple of years away from your next promotion. If your needs are immediate, make sure you review the table of contents of this course and find the most important videos for your immediate needs. For example, in module two, check out the video on communicating your skills and expertise. In modules three and four, check out the videos on packaging your soft and your hard skills. In module five, check out the video titled "Your Imminent Promotion. " If you're here because you're looking for ideas to help you with a promotion that might be months or years out, you're in the right place. The things we discuss in this course should help with your next promotion and hopefully, many promotions after that. Let's get started.
The Plan: How to Get There In the last module, we talk about where you want to end up in your career. In this module, we talk about creating a plan to help us get there. Let's get started.
Soft Skills: How to Prepare for Your Next Role In this module, we're going to talk about soft skills. What are the soft skills that you need to prepare for your next role? At one point in my career I hired three developers. It was interesting that one of the developers that I was most excited about was the one that I was the least anxious to keep on when the project ended. This developer seemed to be very charming and have everything, technical abilities and the ability to sit down with customers. I would be proud to put this developer in front of anybody. What I learned was that he was great at interviewing, and I thought he would be a great developer, but I found out later that the charm that got me so interested in him had a negative impact on everybody else. This showed me that soft skills is not just how you act and interact with people; it's about a lot more. Let's jump in and talk about what that is.
Hard Skills: How to Prepare for Your Next Role In this module, we focus on your hard skills. This is probably where you spend a lot of time on your career and also what you love to do. I want to talk about the hard skills that you can work on to improve your career and how you can position those hard skills. Let's get started.
Where Do We Go from Here? In the first four modules we've talked a lot about what you can do to prepare for your next promotion. Everything we've talked about should help you for the rest of your career. In this last module, I want to wrap things up. I'm going to highlight some main action items that you can work on. We'll talk about exceptions, that is what if you don't get a promotion, or what if there just aren't opportunities out there. And I want to share some final thoughts on very specific things that you can do to prepare for your very next promotion. Let's get started.
