Configure AWS Monitoring for Workload Health

In this lab, you will establish CloudWatch monitoring for an existing retail order-processing workload built with Amazon API Gateway and AWS Lambda. You will first evaluate the telemetry produced by the workload and identify metrics and logs that provide meaningful insight into availability, errors, latency, and resource pressure. You will then configure a CloudWatch alarm to represent an operational health condition and create a dashboard that consolidates key workload health signals for operational review. Finally, you will validate the monitoring configuration against expected workload activity, reinforcing key concepts in AWS workload observability and operational monitoring.

Table of Contents
  1. Challenge

    Evaluate workload health and telemetry
    • Confirm that the existing API Gateway and Lambda resources are producing the required telemetry.
    • Verify that the required telemetry - metrics and logs, is available in CloudWatch
  2. Challenge

    Configure operational health monitoring
    • Configure a CloudWatch dashboard with metrics that provide visibility into workload health and performance.
    • Create a CloudWatch alarm that represents a meaningful operational condition
  3. Challenge

    Build a workload health dashboard
    • Organize key workload health and performance signals into a CloudWatch dashboard for operational review.
    • Provide a consolidated view that enables developers and operations teams to assess the condition of the API and its Lambda backend.
  4. Challenge

    Validate workload monitoring
    • Confirm that the configured alarm and dashboard accurately reflect expected workload activity.
    • Validate that the monitoring configuration provides meaningful operational visibility into errors, latency, availability, and resource behaviour.
