CloudWatch logs provide a valuable source of live and historic data about your AWS services, and this data can be taken to the next level when paired with appropriate metric filters and CloudWatch alarms, ensuring you receive alerts when things go wrong. To accomplish this in the lab, you’ll review and filter the logs of an API service, creating an alarm that triggers an SNS topic when multiple 500 errors are received in a short amount of time.

Create a Simple Notification Service topic for errors with the inventory API service. Do not yet assign the topic a subscription.

Create a Metrics Filter to Filter CloudWatch Logs for Errors
Using a CloudWatch Metrics Filter, filter for any 500 errors in the inventory API access logs and then create a reusable metric based on this filter.

Create a CloudWatch Alarm that Triggers Based on Sensible Error Rates
Using the metric created in the previous objective, create a CloudWatch alarm subscribed to the created SNS topic. Ensure the alarm triggers only when there are repeated failures in a short period of time. Once created, check the alarm state.
