Custom Snort Rules

In this scenario, you are a cybersecurity analyst who is tasked with monitoring traffic in a small enterprise environment called Globomantics. Your job is to create custom Snort rules that identify common malicious activity while minimizing false positives. Once created, test the rules against the system using various attack methods to ensure they are accurate and effective.

  1. Challenge

    Write Custom Snort Rules

For your first objective you will need to create three separate rules in order to detect potential attacks. Specifically, you have been made aware of multiple attempts of ICMP scanning, suspicious HTTP GET requests, and possible SQL injection attempts. Your task is to write Snort rules that detect each of these behaviors and assign them the correct metadata.

  2. Challenge

    Generate Traffic and Test Rules

In this objective, you will simulate malicious network activity to test your custom rules. An attacker machine will attempt ICMP scans, send HTTP requests, and try SQL injection techniques. Your job is to generate this traffic, then verify that Snort rules are alerting on the events.

  3. Challenge

    Reduce False Positives

In this objective, your rules are generating too many alerts from normal traffic. You’ve been asked to tune your signatures using Snort keywords such as flow and content so that they better distinguish between legitimate and malicious activity. Your task is to refine the rules to suppress noise while still detecting true attacks.

  4. Challenge

    The Last Objective

Welcome to the final objective! This is your last chance to experiment in the environment. Clicking End Lab will end this little world that flittered into existence just for you.
