Deploy to EKS with Image Promotion and Rollback

In this hands-on lab, you will release an application for Carved Rock Fitness using Amazon Elastic Container Registry (Amazon ECR) and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS). You will select a candidate image, promote it to the stable release without rebuilding it, deploy its immutable digest, and validate rollout health and the application response. You will then deploy a deliberately degraded follow-up image and roll back to the healthy release. By the end, you will be able to use image identity and rollout evidence to make and verify release decisions.

Table of Contents
  1. Challenge

Select the candidate container image for promotion

Identify the candidate container image prepared by the lab pipeline. Record the ECR repository details and the original stable, candidate, and broken image digests for use throughout the release.

  2. Challenge

Promote the candidate image to the stable release

Promote the candidate image by moving the stable tag to its existing manifest, without rebuilding the image. Verify that the stable and candidate tags identify the same immutable digest.

  3. Challenge

Update the EKS Deployment to the promoted image

Connect to the EKS cluster and verify the healthy version 1 baseline. Update the Deployment to the promoted image digest and confirm that a new revision and ReplicaSet have been created.

  4. Challenge

Validate rollout health before completing the release

Validate the release using rollout completion, Deployment conditions, and pod readiness. Confirm that the application serves version 2 before accepting the release.

  5. Challenge

Roll back the EKS Deployment after a degraded rollout

Detect a deliberately degraded rollout while the previous healthy replicas remain available. Undo the failed rollout and verify that the candidate digest, healthy replicas, and version 2 application response are restored.
