You are a Security Operations Center (SOC) analyst at Globomantics, a financial services firm facing a surge in targeted cyber threats. Your mission is to secure the organization's Linux-based infrastructure against spearphishing and malware delivery. You will utilize the ClamAV antivirus engine to detect malicious attachments, configure real-time defenses to block unauthorized tool transfers, and manually inspect suspicious files masquerading as legitimate documents to implement a robust defense-in-depth strategy.

  1. Challenge

Detect Malicious Email Attachments and Spearphishing Campaigns (T1566.001)

The investigation begins on the Ubuntu Analyst Workstation. The mail gateway has quarantined a batch of suspicious emails targeting the HR department, suspected to be part of a spearphishing campaign. You must determine which attachments are malicious before taking further action.

  2. Challenge

Block Ingress Tool Transfer and Prevent Malware Delivery (T1105)

Intelligence indicates that after the initial phishing attempt, an adversary may try to download additional hacking tools (ingress transfer) from an external server. You must configure the system to actively block these writes and remove any tools that slipped through before the configuration was hardened.

  3. Challenge

Identify File Type Masquerading and Executable Disguising Techniques (T1036.008)

A user has flagged a file that seems like an internal file that behaves suspiciously. The security team suspects masquerading, where executables are renamed to bypass basic extension-based filters. You must move beyond simple scanning and use manual verification methods to reveal the file's true nature.
