FTP: Configure an FTP Server

There are many ways to transfer files through the Internet. One of the older but still very much used methods is sending the file to (or downloading from) an FTP server. This lab will allow you to install and configure VSFTPD - a popular FTP server - and then use that to upload and download files.

  1. Challenge

Install and configure the FTP server and add the specified user

To have an FTP server, we need to install the software for it to work. After installing it, we can configure it to not allow anonymous connections, so that random people can't log in and steal information, and then start the service.

Once that's done, we can add the specified user and set the password. Finally, we can test connectivity locally using the lftp software client.

  2. Challenge

Verify that a client can connect remotely and upload/download files.

From the client, we can run lftp again to make sure we can connect, then switch to the /ftp directory both locally and on the FTP server. Once there, download the download_test_file and upload the upload_test_file.
