Kubernetes Distributed Tracing Backend Deployment with Tempo

Tracing allows you to follow the flow of a request end-to-end within your applications, and provides valuable insight when troubleshooting. In this lab, you will set up and configure Tempo and OpenTelemetry to work within a Kubernetes infrastructure, ensuring two services can communicate and are able to accept tracing data.

  1. Challenge

    Install and configure Tempo

Using the Grafana Community Helm chart, create a values file for configuring Tempo. The file should leverage the existing Kubernetes Secret containing the connection information for SeaweedFS, and define tempo as the backend bucket. Install Tempo, then add it as a Grafana data source.

  2. Challenge

    Set up the OpenTelemetry Collector

Create manifests to configure the OpenTelemetry ConfigMap, service account, deployment, and service. Deploy the manifests to get OpenTelemetry up and running, then view the logs for the deployment to confirm that everything is ready.

  3. Challenge

Verify connectivity between Tempo and the OTEL Collector

Verify the expected endpoints for Tempo, then open a debugging shell on the OpenTelemetry pod and test that it can connect to the Tempo endpoint at tempo, as well as tempo.observability.svc.cluster.local at both ports 4317 and 4318.
