Kubernetes Exemplar Linking and Full-Stack Dashboard Creation

Exemplar linking takes the guesswork out of troubleshooting, associating metrics data points with exact traces. In this lab, you will enable and configure exemplar linking for the observability stack, then develop a Grafana dashboard for effectively tracking issues in the provided application. Finally, you will simulate an issue with high latency and leverage the new dashboard to troubleshoot the “issue.”

  1. Challenge

    Enable Prometheus exemplars

Update the Prometheus stack values file to enable exemplars, then add Prometheus as a data source in the Grafana UI with exemplars turned on and set to associate with the internal Tempo data source, looking for the traceId label.

  2. Challenge

Build a dashboard for the storefront application

Within the Grafana UI, create a dashboard for the storefront application, tracking request rate, latency, and request status by service. Additionally, include panels that show recent logs.

  3. Challenge

    Practice the troubleshooting workflow

Using the high-latency-traffic.sh script, generate some troublesome traffic against the demo application. Then, leverage your newly-created dashboard to move through the troubleshooting workflow, from metrics to traces using exemplars.
