Loading Data into a Redshift Cluster

In this lab, you will load data from your choice of S3 bucket or DynamoDB table into a running Redshift cluster. You will need to create an IAM role that provides access to the S3 bucket or DynamoDB table and apply it to the Redshift cluster. Experience with creating S3 buckets or DynamoDB tables will be useful.

Table of Contents

  1. Challenge

    Configure AWS CLI

Create an Access Key and Secret Access Key in Identity and Access Management (IAM) and configure AWS CLI on the provided Linux server. Ensure that the default region is set to us-east-1.

  2. Challenge

    Prepare the Source Data

Connect to the Cloud Server and download the formatted sample data.

For the S3 bucket, download the CSV-formatted data and upload to a newly created S3 bucket called redshift-import-12345. Note: S3 bucket names must be globally unique, so you may need to try a different number sequence at the end of the bucket name. redshift-data.csv

For the DynamoDB table, download the JSON-formatted data and load into a DynamoDB table called redshift-import.

    redshift-data.json

  3. Challenge

    Create an IAM Role

Create an IAM role with Read Only access to S3 and DynamoDB. Modify the trust policy to allow Redshift and attach the role to the Redshift cluster.

  4. Challenge

Load the Data into the Redshift Cluster

Connect to the Redshift cluster from the provided Linux server and import the data from S3 and DynamoDB. Note: You will need to clear the data from the Redshift cluster before loading the second set of data. Also make sure you have associated your cluster with the redshift-import IAM role.
