Manage S3 Object Lifecycle and Recovery Controls
In this lab, you will configure Amazon S3 data protection and cost optimization controls for a bucket that stores frequently updated business files. You will first examine an existing S3 bucket configuration and identify risks associated with accidental overwrites, deletions, and uncontrolled storage growth. You will then enable S3 versioning to maintain historical copies of objects and simulate recovery scenarios by restoring previous versions after accidental modifications or deletions. Finally, you will configure S3 Lifecycle rules to automatically manage object retention by transitioning older data to lower-cost storage classes and expiring objects that no longer meet business retention requirements. By the end of this lab, you will have configured a resilient, cost-optimized S3 storage solution that protects against accidental data loss and automatically manages the lifecycle of aging objects to meet the organization's retention and compliance requirements.

-
Challenge
Evaluate object storage and existing data management behavior
- Inspect the existing S3 environment, how objects are stored, updated and retained.
- Review the impact of frequently updated files, accidental object changes and storage growth.
-
Challenge
Implement S3 object versioning and recovery controls
- Enable and verify object versioning for the S3 bucket, ensuring previous object states are preserved.
- Demonstrate restoring prior object version after an overwrite.
-
Challenge
Configure S3 lifecycle policies for retention and cost optimization
- Create and configure lifecycle rules to manage object retention by transitioning objects to appropriate storage classes.
- Configure lifecycle controls to automatically expire or archive data according to retention policies.
-
Challenge
Validate S3 data protection and lifecycle behavior
- Test and confirm object versioning enables recovery from accidental changes or deletions while maintaining access to current objects.
- Verify that lifecycle policies correctly manage object transitions and expiration based on the configured retention and cost optimization requirements.
