Managing an AWS CDK Application

While the CDK can help you create AWS applications efficiently, how you organize your CDK apps and stacks can affect the ease in which you manage your application. In this hand-on lab, you’ll work with a growing CDK application in a monolith state to refactor it into different deployable stacks, ensuring each stack has the appropriate references and dependencies.

Table of Contents

  1. Challenge

    Bootstrap Environment

Bootstrap the provided lab environment so it can use the CDK.

  2. Challenge

    Refactor the Database

Refactor the provided monolith code so the database is its own stack. Be conscientious of the fact other stacks will need to reference the table name and make adjustments to the code accordingly.

    Deploy the stack.

  3. Challenge

Refactor the Lambda Function and Permissions

Make the Lambda functions and their permissions its own stack, ideally so that each Lambda function is stored in its own file as an exported class. The IAM role should also be its own class. These should then be pulled into an overall file that defines the Lambda stack itself. Be sure to consider that these functions need to be referenced in the API Gateway stack.

    Deploy the stack.

  4. Challenge

    Refactor the API Gateway

Refactor the API Gateway into its own stack. Deploy this stack when finished.
