Monitor a Basic EC2 Workload with Amazon CloudWatch

You'll use Amazon CloudWatch to observe a running EC2 workload, establish what its normal behavior looks like, and then catch and resolve a problem when one appears. Working from live metrics, logs, and instance state, you'll learn to tell healthy operation from trouble and use those signals to narrow down a real operational issue. By the end, you'll have hands-on practice with the core skill every cloud operator relies on: reading CloudWatch to know whether a workload is actually fine.

  1. Challenge

Observe the normal behavior of the EC2 workload
    • Locate the CloudWatch metric views that show the workload's current state.
    • Verify the expected baseline behavior before any issue is introduced (no issues).
  2. Challenge

Identify the abnormal workload condition using CloudWatch signals
    • Five to 10 minutes after starting the lab, observe the symptoms of the introduced issue through metrics within CloudWatch.
    • Correlate the available signals to narrow down the likely cause.
  3. Challenge

Restore expected workload behavior and confirm recovery
    • Restart the EC2 instance to correct the identified issue.
    • Confirm through CloudWatch that the workload has returned to the expected state.
