Network Protocols for Security: REST APIs and OAuth Lab
In this hands-on lab, you’ll use a Linux environment to generate, inspect, and analyze REST API and OAuth 2.0 network traffic. You’ll work with HTTP requests, JSON payloads, and OAuth authorization flows to identify sensitive data exposure, examine token exchanges and bearer tokens, and apply security analysis techniques to understand how applications communicate with APIs.

Challenge
Generate REST API traffic using common API clients
You’ll set up a Linux environment and use a common API client to generate and inspect REST API traffic. Configure the tools required for the lab, send GET and POST requests to a REST API, and examine the resulting HTTP requests and responses, including methods, headers, status codes, and JSON payloads.
-
Challenge
Analyze HTTP methods and JSON payloads for potential data exposure
You’ll analyze REST API requests and responses to identify potentially exposed or unnecessary information. Review JSON request and response payloads to identify personal information, email addresses, user identifiers, internal system information, and authentication-related data, and assess whether the information being returned is appropriate and necessary.
-
Challenge
Inspect OAuth 2.0 authorization flows
You’ll inspect an OAuth 2.0 authorization flow and analyze token-related network traffic. Examine authorization requests, redirects, authorization codes, token exchanges, access tokens, refresh tokens, and bearer tokens, and identify security considerations when handling OAuth traffic and sensitive authentication data.
