Operate and Validate Amazon RDS Multi-AZ and Read Replica Transitions

In this lab you will explore how to create highly available, performant, and resilient managed databases on AWS using RDS Multi-AZ instances and read replicas. You will instantiate a Multi-AZ backup instance as well as a read replica, and observe how read and write traffic is distributed to these instances. You will then simulate a failover event and observe failover behavior for read and write traffic.

Table of Contents
  1. Challenge

    Deploy RDS Read Replica

Deploy a read replica for your RDS instance called rds-lab-postgres.

  2. Challenge

    Deploy RDS Multi-AZ Standby Instance

Configure a standy instance in a separate availability zone.

  3. Challenge

Distribute Client Read Traffic Between Primary and Read Replica

Observe read behavior when traffic is distributed between main instance and read replica. Note that traffic is not diverted to the read replica by default, you have to point the application to the read replica enpoint.

  4. Challenge

    Initiate a Multi-AZ RDS Failover

Trigger an RDS failover and observe read and write behavior during failover. Note that the IP address is now different for primary instance traffic, while the endpoint hostname stays the same.

  5. Challenge

Promote the Read Replica to Become the Primary Instance

Promote the read replica and configure the client to direct all traffic to the new primary instance. Note that the old primary instance and standby instance are no longer synchronizing with the newly promoted instance.
