OS Analysis with Volatility

In this lab, you’ll practice memory forensics techniques to recover credentials, analyze injected code, and reconstruct attacker activity from a compromised Windows memory dump. When you’re finished, you’ll be able to recover forensic artifacts, reconstruct attacker activity, and develop an attack narrative. Throughout the investigation, you will perform a forensic analysis of a captured Windows memory image using Volatility 3. You will begin by validating the memory acquisition process, identifying the operating system profile, and establishing a baseline understanding of the system state. You will then analyze volatile artifacts to identify suspicious processes, evidence of code injection, and attacker activity that may not be visible through traditional disk-based analysis.

Table of Contents
  1. Challenge

Recover sensitive operating system artifacts from a Windows memory dump

Capture a memory image from a live Windows system, verify the integrity of the acquired evidence, and identify the operating system information required to perform forensic memory analysis with Volatility 3.

  2. Challenge

Investigate suspicious processes and identify evidence of code injection

Analyze a captured memory image to identify suspicious process activity and determine whether malicious code was injected into a legitimate Windows process.

  3. Challenge

Reconstruct attacker activity and develop an attack narrative from command history artifacts

Analyze command-line and process artifacts recovered from memory to identify attacker actions, correlate those actions with running processes, and reconstruct attacker behavior to support incident response and reporting efforts.
