Pushing a File to a GitHub Repository

In this hands-on lab, you are a developer who is starting a new development project. Before writing any code, you need create a GitHub repository, clone it locally, add a `README.md` file, commit the file, and push it to GitHub.

  1. Challenge

    Clone a Repository from GitHub Called `new-project`
    1. In the terminal, generate an SSH key, accepting the defaults.
    2. View and copy the public key.
    3. On GitHub, add a new SSH key, pasting in the public key you just copied.
    4. Create a new repository called "new-project".
    5. Get the SSH URL for the new-project repository.
    6. In the terminal, clone the new-project repository using the SSH URL.

    Create `README.md` File
    1. Change to the new-project directory.
    2. Create a README.md file with the contents: New Development Project
    3. Save and exit the file.
  3. Challenge

    Add `README.md` to the Local Git Repository

    In the terminal, run the command to add the README.md file to Git.

  4. Challenge

    Commit the Changes with a Commit Message

    In the terminal, run the command to commit the file with a commit message: "Add README file"

  5. Challenge

    Push the Changes Back to GitHub
    1. In the terminal, run the command to push the changes back to GitHub.
    2. Check the GitHub repo to verify the README.md file appears.
