Tune MySQL Query Performance with EXPLAIN and Indexes
In this lab, you’ll find a slow MySQL query, read its execution plan with `EXPLAIN`, and improve its performance with indexes. By the end of the lab, you’ll have a report query that reads a fraction of the rows it started with.

Challenge
Identify resource-intensive queries
Run the merchandising team's payment report, then use the tools MySQL gives you to see what that one query costs the server.
-
Challenge
Analyze the query execution plan
Read the plan MySQL chose for that query, in both the form Workbench draws and the table EXPLAIN prints, and write down a baseline to improve on.
-
Challenge
Optimize query performance using indexes
Add indexes one at a time, checking with EXPLAIN after each one, until the report query is answered from an index instead of the table.
