Using ElastiCache to Improve Database Performance

This lab presents an application that is struggling under load due to a low read/write provisioned capacity. We navigate through the process of provisioning an ElastiCache cluster so we can implement a simplistic cache in front of the database. Basic knowledge of the Linux CLI, file commands, and Vim editor is expected.

Table of Contents

  1. Challenge

    Measure the Baseline Performance

    1. Create the app directory.

    2. Edit the database configuration.

    3. Create the baseline performance measurement of the application. We will compare this with the Redis performance after our changes.

  2. Challenge

    Deploy the Redis Cluster

    1. Create the security group and necessary inbound rules.
    2. Deploy a new Redis cluster to use as our cache.
  3. Challenge

Update the Application and Measure its Performance

    1. Update the application to use the Redis cluster as a "cache-aside."
    2. Re-measure the application's performance and note the new total time. This should be significantly less time than the original total time.
