Volumes, Multi-Containers & Logging for CKAD

In this lab, you will get hands-on experience with key Kubernetes skills. You will learn how to create persistent storage, attach and mount it to a running NGINX pod, and set up multi-container pods that share data using an emptyDir volume. You will also verify log sharing, implement centralized logging by redirecting logs to a shared folder, use a sidecar container to stream or send the logs, mount volumes as read-only in the sidecar, and copy logs for analysis—all focused on building practical, real-world Kubernetes skills.

Table of Contents

  1. Challenge

    Use Persistent Volumes

    • Create a PersistentVolume task-pv (hostPath /tmp/data, 1Gi).
    • Create a matching PersistentVolumeClaim task-pvc.
    • Attach the PVC to a Pod running nginx, mounted at /usr/share/nginx/html.
    • Use kubectl exec to write a file and verify persistence.
  2. Challenge

    Create Multi-Container Pods

    • Create a Pod logger-pod with two containers.
    • Use an emptyDir volume shared between both containers.
    • Verify log sharing viakubectl logs -c logger logger-pod.
  3. Challenge

    Implement Centralized Logging Patterns

    • Redirect application logs to a shared directory.
    • Use a sidecar to continuously stream or ship logs.
    • Explore mounting volumes read-only in the sidecar.
    • Use kubectl cp to extract log files for analysis.
