Work with Filter and Context Modifier DAX Functions in Power BI

In this lab, you’ll get hands-on practice working with filter and context modifier DAX functions in Microsoft Power BI. When you’re finished, you’ll have a solid understanding of how to manipulate filter context in DAX to add, remove, and update filters.

  1. Challenge

Get Started in the Lab Environment

Here are the initial instructions and explanation of the lab environment. Read this while your environment is busy creating itself from nothing. Yes, this violates physics; we know. How fun!

  2. Challenge

    Use the CALCULATE Function

In this first challenge, you’ll set up a Power BI data model for learning and explore how to use the CALCULATE function in DAX. You’ll work with a sample dataset in Power BI Desktop and create a few measures that use CALCULATE.

  3. Challenge

Use the ALL and REMOVEFILTERS Functions

From time to time, you may need to ignore some filters in DAX. To do this, you can use several functions—ALL and REMOVEFILTERS among them. In this challenge, you’ll see these two functions in action.

  4. Challenge

Use the FILTER and VALUES Functions

In some cases, you may not want to ignore existing filters—instead, you may simply want to add new ones. In those situations, the FILTER function can be useful. You might also want to reapply filters that were previously ignored, and for that, you can use the VALUES function. In this challenge, you’ll explore how these functions behave in different scenarios and how they can help you control filter context in your calculations.

    The Last Challenge

Welcome to the final challenge! This is your last chance to experiment in the environment. Clicking Finish Lab will end this little world that flittered into existence just for you.
