Build and Secure an Azure Virtual Network

In this guided Azure networking lab, you will deploy a virtual network with two subnets, run a CLI script to provision Ubuntu VMs, create subnet-level network security groups to layer on top of existing NIC-level rules, and test cross-subnet connectivity to build practical intuition for how Azure evaluates traffic across multiple NSG layers.

  1. Challenge

Deploy a Virtual Network and Provision Virtual Machines
    • Deploy an Azure virtual network with two subnets designed for a web-facing tier and an application tier.
    • Run a CLI script in Cloud Shell to provision two Ubuntu virtual machines with NIC-level network security groups allowing SSH access.
    • Verify the deployed environment by reviewing the virtual network, subnets, VMs, and NIC-level NSGs in the Azure portal.
  2. Challenge

Create Subnet-Level Network Security Groups for Layered Security
    • Create subnet-level network security groups and associate them with the appropriate subnets.
    • Observe how Azure evaluates inbound traffic across subnet-level and NIC-level NSGs.
    • Configure inbound rules to allow SSH and HTTP traffic for the web-facing subnet while blocking all other traffic by default.
  3. Challenge

Test and Troubleshoot Network Connectivity Across Subnets
    • Test connectivity between virtual machines across subnets within the same virtual network.
    • Use Azure's effective security rules view to understand how multiple NSG layers combine to control traffic.
    • Verify that the application-tier VM is reachable only from within the virtual network and not directly from the internet.
