Deploying Azure Templates

In this hands-on lab, we use the Azure portal to modify the QuickStart template to add an additional data disk prior to deployment. We will then deploy this template and confirm that the changes we made were successfully deployed.

  1. Challenge

    Connect to the Azure Portal with the Lab Account

    Log in to the portal using the supplied username and password.

  2. Challenge

    Use Template Deployment and Edit the Template

    1. From the portal home, click + Create.

    2. Search for the type template.

    3. Select Template deployment (deploy using custom templates).

    4. Select Create a Windows virtual machine.

    5. Click Edit template.

    6. Add a second data disk with "lun": 1. The dataDisk section starts around line 290. Edit that section so it appears as:

    7. Change the instance type to Standard_D2s_v3. The vmSize section starts around line 130. Change the defaultValue parameter to the specified instance type.

    8. Click Save.

    Edit the Parameters

    1. Click Edit parameters.
    2. Change the "adminUsername" parameter to "localadmin", with the quotation marks.
    3. Change the "dnsLabelPrefix" parameter to "vm1446aaadd", with the quotation marks. Replace aaa with your initials and dd with your the date of your choosing (e.g., "vm1446rb31").
    4. Click Save.

    Create the Virtual Machine

    1. Enter a 12-72 character password. Follow the on-screen instructions until a green check mark appears.
    2. Click Review + create, then click Create.
  5. Challenge

    Verify Deployment by Clicking the Bell on the Azure Menu

    1. Click the bell on the Azure menu.
    2. Once it is complete, click Home > All resources > simple-vm > Settings > Disks.
    3. Verify there are two data disks, LUN 0 and LUN 1. This shows the template was edited successfully.
