Establishing Private Service Access with Azure Private Link

Locking down a PaaS service is only half the job; your workloads still need a private way in. In this hands-on lab, you'll use the Azure portal to create a private endpoint for an Azure Storage account, configure the private DNS resolution that makes it work from a spoke network, and verify from a workload VM that traffic takes the private path. You'll finish by confirming that the service's public endpoint is blocked from the workload's network.

  1. Challenge

Inspect the workload's current path to the storage account

Before you change anything, establish a baseline. You'll review how the storage account and the spoke virtual network are configured, then test name resolution and access from the workload VM so you can compare the results once private access is in place.

  2. Challenge

Create the private endpoint for Blob Storage

Give the storage account a private IP address inside the spoke network. You'll create a private endpoint for the account's blob service in the subnet set aside for private endpoints, and confirm the connection is approved.

  3. Challenge

Configure private name resolution for the workload

A private endpoint only helps if the workload can find it. You'll connect the endpoint to the existing private DNS zone and make that zone available to the workload's virtual network, so the storage account's name resolves to its private address.

  4. Challenge

Verify private access and confirm the public endpoint is blocked

Prove the private path works end to end. From the workload VM, you'll confirm the storage account's name resolves to the private endpoint, retrieve the test file over that path, and confirm that a request sent to the public endpoint is rejected.
