Troubleshooting and Restoring a Misconfigured Virtual Machine

As an Azure administrator responding to an escalated support ticket, you will troubleshoot a Windows virtual machine that appears to be running but is no longer accessible for administrative support. The application owner also reports that the system drive needs additional capacity before the workload can return to normal operation. You will use Boot Diagnostics to verify the VM’s startup state, correct a misconfigured Network Security Group (NSG) rule to restore secure remote access, and resize the OS disk. By the end of this lab, you will have gained practical experience diagnosing Azure VM access issues, correcting network security configuration, and restoring storage capacity for a Windows workload.

  1. Challenge

Diagnose Azure virtual machine health and access issues

Use the Azure portal to evaluate the operational state of a Windows virtual machine that appears to be online but is unreachable, leveraging Boot Diagnostics to confirm whether the operating system is starting successfully and identify the layer at which access has broken down.

  2. Challenge

Restore secure administrative access to a private Windows virtual machine

Inspect the VM's Network Security Group configuration, then update the appropriate NSG rule to restore the intended access path.

  3. Challenge

Increase system drive capacity for a running Windows workload

Expand the VM's OS disk to 256 GiB to satisfy the application owner's capacity requirement, completing the final remediation step before returning the workload to normal operation.
