Creating a Regional Managed Instance Group with Autoscaling and Autohealing

This lab focuses on building resilient and scalable compute infrastructure using Google Compute Engine managed instance groups in a production-like environment. An instance template is created to standardize virtual machine configuration and startup behavior, then used to deploy a regional managed instance group. Health checks and autohealing capabilities are implemented to automatically replace unhealthy instances, while CPU-based autoscaling policies dynamically adjust capacity during workload spikes. Learners then generate load and observe the infrastructure automatically scaling to meet demand.

Table of Contents
  1. Challenge

Create instance templates to standardize VM configuration and startup scripts
    • Define a standardized virtual machine configuration for application deployment.
    • Incorporate a startup script to automate application and service initialization.
    • Validate that the instance template is available for managed instance group deployment.
  2. Challenge

Deploy a managed instance group (MIG) with auto-healing capabilities
    • Deploy a regional managed instance group using the standardized instance template.
    • Configure health monitoring to evaluate instance availability and application responsiveness.
    • Implement auto-healing policies to automatically replace unhealthy instances.
  3. Challenge

Configure autoscaling policies to dynamically add capacity during CPU stress events
    • Configure CPU-based autoscaling thresholds and scaling boundaries for the managed instance group.
    • Generate workload activity to simulate increased compute demand on running instances.
    • Verify that additional instances are provisioned automatically in response to elevated CPU utilization.
