  1. Challenge

Configure Database Availability and Backup Protections

Inspect the existing Google Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL instance, review its availability and backup settings, configure automated backups with a seven-day retention period, enable regional high availability with a standby instance in another zone, and verify that the database meets the required availability and backup protections.

  2. Challenge

Create a Recoverable Data State and Simulate Data Loss

Connect to the Cloud SQL PostgreSQL database from the provided Compute Engine VM, create and populate a sample customer table with five records, and verify the data before capturing a known recoverable state through an on-demand backup. After confirming the backup completes successfully, simulate accidental data loss by deleting the records and verify that the table is empty.

  3. Challenge

Restore and Verify the Protected Database

Locate the previously created Cloud SQL on-demand backup and restore it to the designated recovery instance. Verify the instance's network configuration and availability, connect to the restored PostgreSQL database, and confirm that all five original customer records have been recovered and the database is operational, demonstrating successful recovery from the simulated data loss.
