Working with Disks on Google Compute Engine

This lab focuses on managing persistent block storage for a Google Compute Engine virtual machine in a production-like environment. A balanced persistent disk is provisioned, attached to an active VM, and configured within a Linux filesystem. Storage growth is then simulated by resizing the disk and expanding the filesystem online. The lab demonstrates how storage capacity can be scaled without interrupting a running system.

Table of Contents
  1. Challenge

Provision and attach balanced persistent disks (pd-balanced) to active instances
    • Provision a balanced persistent disk and associate it with a running Compute Engine instance
    • Configure additional block storage for use with an active virtual machine
    • Verify that the newly attached disk is recognized by the operating system without service interruption
  2. Challenge

Mount and format additional storage volumes within a Linux environment
    • Format a raw block device using a Linux filesystem
    • Configure a mount point and integrate the storage volume into the Linux directory structure
    • Validate that the mounted storage is accessible and persists as expected within the system
  3. Challenge

Resize persistent disks and expand file systems online to meet capacity needs
    • Resize an existing persistent disk to increase available storage capacity
    • Extend the filesystem to utilize newly allocated disk space
    • Verify that expanded storage is available to the operating system without requiring downtime
