Creating Azure SQL Databases Using PowerShell

In this lab, we walk through using Azure PowerShell to create a SQL Database. This beginner-level hands-on lab covers several concepts, including the following. * Creating variables to store key parameters. * Identifying the proper cmdlets to create an Azure SQL Server and Azure SQL Database. * Creating the Azure SQL Server and Database using the correct parameters. This hands-on lab uses the Azure Cloud Shell, so there's no need to install any software. This way it's possible to follow along at work or home using the web browser.

  1. Challenge

    Create the Variables for the SQL Server and Database

    Use the instructions below as a guide. Refer to the video for complete steps.

    Note: The resource group and subscription have already been created.

    1. Log in to the Azure Portal using the provided credentials.
    2. Navigate to the Cloud Shell, using the >_ icon in the toolbar.
    3. Use PowerShell in the Cloud Shell.
    4. Identify the existing resource group with Get-AzResourceGroup.
    5. Set a variable for the existing resource group name.
    6. Set a variable for the location.
    7. Set a variable for the SQL Server name you will be creating.
  2. Challenge

    Create the Azure SQL Server

    Create the Azure SQL Server using New-AzSQLServer with the following parameters.

    • Resource group: Use the variable created in the previous task.
    • Server name: Use the variable created in the previous task.
    • Location: Use the variable created in the previous task.
    • Server version: 12.0
    • SQL administrator credentials: Use Get-Credentials.
  3. Challenge

    Create the SQL Database

    Create the Azure SQL Database using New-AzSQLDatabase with the following parameters.

    • Resource group: Use the previously-created variable.
    • Server name: Use the previously-created variable.
    • Database name: Use the previously-created variable.
