DoD 8140 FAQs

What is DoD 8140, and how does it relate to the DCWF?

DoD Directive 8140 defines the DoD cyber workforce and introduces the DCWF as the authoritative framework for identifying, tracking, and reporting cyber positions. The DCWF categorizes cyber work into seven workforce elements and 73 roles, each with defined tasks and required knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs).

What are the qualification requirements under DoD 8140?

Personnel assigned to DCWF-coded positions must meet:

  • Foundational qualifications within nine months of assignment
  • Resident qualifications within 12 months of assignment

Continuous professional development is also required to maintain qualifications.

How can I fulfill the qualification requirements under DoD 8140?

Recognized trainings must be accredited and align with at least 70% of the DCWF work role responsibilities.

Pluralsight offers accredited training for the 14 work roles in the cybersecurity workforce element, meeting 100% of the KSAs defined in the DCWF for each work role. The DoD 8140 Qualification Matrices provide detailed mappings of certifications to work roles and proficiency levels.
