Testing an nginx Update with LXD

When it comes to containers, one of the benefits is the speed at which they deploy, making them ideal for testing changes. In this hands-on lab, we take an existing web container, copy it, then make some updates to `nginx`, ensuring we didn't break anything with our changes while still maintaining an isolated existing web environment.

  1. Challenge

Deploy a Container Based on the web01 Container

Take a snapshot of the existing container:

    lxc snapshot web01 1.0

Create web-test based on this snapshot:

    lxc copy web01/1.0 web-test
    lxc start web-test

  2. Challenge

    Install nginx mainline from Source

Copy the provided installation script to the new web-test container:

    lxc file push /tmp/files/labfiles/nginx-script.sh web-test/tmp/

    Access the container:

    lxc exec web-test -- ash

Remove the current version of nginx:

    rc-service nginx stop
    apk del nginx
    mv /etc/nginx /etc/nginx-old

Run the script to install nginx 1.17.1:

    chmod +x /tmp/nginx-script.sh
    sh /tmp/nginx-script.sh

  3. Challenge

    Check the Website

Confirm the website is working on the container itself:

    curl localhost

Now check on the LXD server:

    lxc list
    curl <ip_of_web-test>

To finish, take a snapshot of the completed build:

    lxc snapshot web-test nginx-build
