Course Overview Hi everyone, and welcome to this course, PRINCE2 - The Plans Theme where we will take a deep dive into the PRINCE2 planning approach. My name is Tommy van Schaik, and I'm currently employed as a project manager for the Dutch Government. This course is the fifth course in the PRINCE2 Practitioner Learning Path. PRINCE2 is a project management method based on gathering years of best practice on project management from commercial and government organizations around the world. This course is about the PRINCE2 planning approach, which is a product-based, step-by-step approach to project planning that has proven to increase the control in your project and improve internal communication. This course, we will focus on the PRINCE2 planning approach, the different levels of planning, and the product and activity-based planning techniques. By the end of this course, not only will you have detailed knowledge about the PRINCE2 planning approach, but you will also be able to apply this product-based technique to your own projects, increasing the control of your project and improving the communication. So let's go ahead and get started with the PRINCE2 planning approach in this course, PRINCE2 - The Plans Theme, here at Pluralsight.
Levels of Planning Hi there, and welcome to the second module in the course, PRINCE2 - The Planning Theme. In this course, we will explain all the different levels of planning in the PRINCE2 management method. Each level of planning has its own level of detail, and the gathering of best practices that PRINCE2 did over the years proved that this is the most successful way to plan for your project. Now in this module, we will discuss each level of planning, what problems are covered by using these different planning levels, and what are the benefits of using this approach to planning. Understanding the levels of planning is useful throughout the rest of the course and will help you understand PRINCE2's product-based planning technique. Applying different levels of planning will help you with getting more overview and more effective planning within your project. You will also notice that using different levels of planning will make estimating your planning way more accurate. After this course, you will know all about the different levels of planning used in the PRINCE2 management method and how to apply these different layers of planning in your own project. Now we will be going through this module as followed. First, we will present you with the problem that led to the different levels of planning, which is known as the planning horizon problem, and why this problem makes planning so difficult. Then we will introduce the levels of planning and go through each of the planning levels individually, so that's the program plan, the project plan, stage plan, team plan, and the exception plan. Alright then, let's get ready for this module on the different PRINCE2 planning levels.
Designing the Plan and Analyzing the Products Hello everyone, and welcome to the third module of this course. In this module, we will be looking at designing the plan and analyzing the products, which are the first two steps in the PRINCE2's approach to planning. In this module, we will first look at what to look for when designing the general layouts of your plans, and then we will focus on the first real step in the PRINCE2 planning approach, which is analyzing the products. This step immediately goes to the core of the product-based planning technique, which is central to the PRINCE2 planning approach. In this module, we will go through each of the steps in this product-based planning technique so in the end you will be able to implement this technique in your own product. Years of gathering best practices has learned that product-based planning proves to be the most successful and comprehensive way to start planning your project. So after this module, you will be able to incorporate the product-based planning technique into your own projects, which will increase the control and the communication within your project. First, we will look at the first step of the PRINCE2 planning approach, which is designing the plan. And then we will go to define and analyze the products, which is the core of the product-based planning technique, and we will go through each of the steps in that product-based planning technique. So that is the project product description, the product breakdown structure, the product descriptions themselves, and a product flow diagram. Alright then, let's get started on this module.
Activities, Dependencies, and Estimating Hi, and welcome to this fourth module in the PRINCE2 planning theme. In this module, we will look at the next two steps in the PRINCE2 planning approach, which is identifying the activities and dependencies where we look at the activities that need to take place in order to create products we identified in the product-based planning approach, and then we will focus on estimating. What are some common tricks you can use to make estimates on various things in your project like the time needed, the cost, and the risk of certain activities. In this module, we will focus on how to derive activities from the products we described in the product breakdown structure. Products form the basis of the PRINCE2 planning technique, but as we move through this module, we will notice a lot of other planning mechanisms can be derived from the products we identified in the previous steps. The activity breakdown is one of those methods. In fact, this method proved to add so much actual information that made it easier to plan that it is made part of the official PRINCE2 planning approach. After getting this information by identifying the related activities and dependencies, we will have enough information to start estimating the work that needs to be done in our project. Both of these steps will help greatly in creating a good schedule for the rest of the project. Alright, so first we're going to focus on the activities and dependencies, then we will look at how to prepare estimates for your project, and lastly, we will look at some common estimation techniques. Alright, so let's continue with the third and the fourth step in the PRINCE2 planning approach.
Scheduling, Risk Management, and Documenting Hi everyone, and welcome to the last module in this course, PRINCE2 - The Planning Theme. In this course, we will cover the last three steps in the PRINCE2 planning approach. We have now identified the products that need to be developed and the activities that need to be carried out to do so. And after learning the basics of estimating, it's now time to actually create the schedule. This module will present you with a lot of pointers in creating a decent schedule and basic concepts like slack, critical paths, and some of the risks that might reveal itself when creating a schedule. The information we gathered in the previous modules now all falls together in the creation of the schedule that will form the foundation of the planning in your project. The tips and tricks learned in this course will make sure you avoid many of the known pitfalls to make your schedules and plans as effective as possible. Alright, so first we're going to look at the scheduling concepts using an example. Then we go to provide you with some common risks associated with planning. And finally, we'll look at a few tricks that you can use while documenting and distributing the plans you write in your PRINCE2 project. Alright, so let's go ahead with the last three steps in the PRINCE2 planning approach.
